Until about 10 years ago, you would be surprised just how many bands were either guitar-only, or synth-only... with very little crossover.
My favorite band Children of Bodom, considered melodic death metal, rely very heavily on synths throughout all there songs. If you can use synthesizers in death metal you can use them in just about any style of music!

Greetings Bodom,

Yeah, my favourite metal bands often use(d) keyboards and synthesizers... probably the best two exponents of that combination IMO were Fear Factory and Type O Negative. Fear Factory in particular were pioneers, and others have since followed in their footsteps too, including the slightly crazy Strapping Young Lad whose track Detox is worth checking out if you don't know it. Wow brutal song. Ill have to start listening to these guys. Now that I think of it I seen these guys a few years back at Ozzfest. There were like 30 bands there and I guess I forgot I even seen them that day. Good stuff.

Are you a bit of a blues aficionado, bhante?

I remember your liking of Funky Kingston too. :D There'll be a little bit of Kingston representation later on but not much compared to what I tend to listen to at the moment, but that's mainly because dub is a mixing method moreso than an actual band per se: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dub_music" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , and back in the 70's, when dub and reggae was at its peak, there weren't actually many who could do it. That changed later in the 80's with the introduction of digital technology but as the technology improved, the quality and skill of the backing tracks (i.e. the actual pre-dub musicianship) deteriorated.

I love dub. I'm a huge fan of King Tubby et al; and some of the later stuff, like Scientist and Mad Professor.

While dub isn't exactly producing new music (as you noted, by definition it's remixing master tapes), artists still managed to create tracks which differed significantly from the original. A great example (and arguably the best dub track of all time) is King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown.

The original and dub are put side-by-side here, with King Tubby taking the controls at 2:26 or so

Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent in this thread. As you were

I couldn't decide on a list like that to save my life. Here is just a sample of the range that I listen to:

Ayria, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack
Husker Du, Green Day, Black Flag, The Ramones, The Clash
Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Otis Rush, Downchild Blues Band
Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Faith No More, NIN
Beethoven, Vivaldi, Bach
New Order/ Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Modern English

Way, way to many to list.

Not sure why, but I never liked Daft Punk.

Fingers crossed Punabbhava will be number one! I've got over 90 days still to make my mark :D

Have you got a premade list of 100 bands or just popping them out as they come to mind?
