Post by khemindas » Fri Aug 09, 2019 3:19 pm

Just curious is there any really informative book about history of Buddhism in english, which is not only teach basic knowledge, but take all countries. For example I didn't find any book about Buddhist history, which covers together, history of Buddhism in Maldives, Iran, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Buryatia, Kalmykia and Tuva (in Russia), Malaysia, North Korea, China, Sri lanka, Korea, India, Thailand, Pakistan, Cambodia, Myanmar, Afganistan, Japan, Laos, Tajikistan, Vietnam, Mongolia, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Kazahstan, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Phillipines, Turkmenistan e.t.c. in one book. Is there such a huge and informative book about history of Buddhism?

I've read it long time ago, when I knew quite little about buddhism. At that time it felt as quite comprehensive.

History of Indian Buddhism. (Publications de l'Institut Orientaliste de Louvain)

https://www.amazon.com/dp/906831100X/re ... tDbZZ179ZC

It's available for free online as well. I believe it's on the handful of leaves website.
A dying man can only rely upon his wisdom, if he developed it. Wisdom is not dependent upon any phenomenon originated upon six senses. It is developed on the basis of the discernment of the same. That’s why when one’s senses start to wither and die, the knowledge of their nature remains unaffected. When there is no wisdom, there will be despair, in the face of death.

Rupert Gethin's The Foundations of Buddhism gives a good overview of Buddhism in general. It doesn't have Buddhist histories of all the countries you listed though; I don't think such a book exists.

There is no real history of Buddhism in North Korea, one of the countries mentioned, because Buddhism ceases to openly and legally exist after the establishment of the DPRK. The “monks” and lay people sometimes trotted out for visitors are transparent fakes. However, the history of Korean Buddhism until this date and South Korea is covered by both general books on East Asian Buddhism and more specialized books on Korean Buddhism. Admittedly, it is under researched.

One of the first general histories of Buddhism I read after deciding to practice in the Theravada was Noble Ross Reat's Buddhism: A History. I liked it and read it twice. It should be easy to find a used copy or maybe in a library or inter-library loan.

16. 'In what has the world originated?' — so said the Yakkha Hemavata, — 'with what is the world intimate? by what is the world afflicted, after having grasped at what?' (167)

17. 'In six the world has originated, O Hemavata,' — so said Bhagavat, — 'with six it is intimate, by six the world is afflicted, after having grasped at six.' (168)
