Monasteries in and around California?

Post by eto »

Hello, any suggestions for good places to practice over a shorter period of time (say a few weeks) in and around the California area? (besides Wat Metta). Also, how did you like it? (if you've been there)

Thank you.

Abhayagiri in Northern California is great. Been there a number of times. Forest setting, you get your own kuti and walking path to practice in, good Vinaya, good people. I think I found it through Google.

I enjoyed a stay at Aloka Vihara last year, and am planning more visits. It's a monastery for Bhikkhunis (fully ordained women) in the Thai Forest tradition, and they accommodate visitors of any gender. It's a beautiful spot bordered (somewhat ironically) by California wineries, and near a forested area. The Bhikkhunis are kind, knowledgeable, and sincere practicers. Highly recommended!
