What exactly was this Ajahn Chah qoute?

Post by manas »

I recall it as going something like this: "Don't be someone, don't be a Sotapanna...(etc)

(Italicization mine).
It seems to be a very profound quote, and i recall reading it recently, but now when I try searching for the full and correct quote, I can't find it. If anyone could please assist, I'd much appreciate it!
"Isn't it amazing, friends! Isn't it astounding! — the extent to which mindfulness immersed in the body, when developed & pursued, is said by the Blessed One who knows, who sees — the worthy one, rightly self-awakened — to be of great fruit & great benefit." (Kayagata-sati Sutta, excerpt)

Found two versions:
“Don’t be an arahant, don’t be a bodhisattva, don’t be anything at all. If you are an arahant you will suffer, if you are a bodhisattva you will suffer, if you are anything at you will suffer.”

Thank you :anjali: It's so simple yet profound, and goes straight to the heart.

There is also the quote from him in my signature;

Do not try to become anything. Do not make yourself into anything. Do not be a meditator. Do not become enlightened. When you sit, let it be. When you walk, let it be. Grasp at nothing. Resist nothing.

The heart of the path is so simple. No need for long explanations. Give up clinging to love and hate, just rest with things as they are. That is all I do in my own practice.

Do not try to become anything. Do not make yourself into anything. Do not be a meditator. Do not become enlightened. When you sit, let it be. When you walk, let it be. Grasp at nothing. Resist nothing.

Of course, there are dozens of meditation techniques to develop samadhi and many kinds of vipassana. But it all comes back to this-just let it all be. Step over here where it is cool, out of the battle.

And the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Behold now, bhikkhus, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

This was the last word of the Tathagata.
