Shravasti Dhammika

Post by DNS »

A lot of you here probably know of Shravasti Dhammika from some of his many good books, including Good Question, Good Answer, or his blog or his controversial Broken Buddha.

He has written over 25 books and many articles at Dhamma Wiki. He's been a kalyana-mitta of mine for about 15 years.

He was the spiritual head of a temple in Singapore for many years. In 2017 he moved back to Australia and is in semi-retirement, semi-seclusion. He continues to write about the Dhamma. Here is an interesting video with some biographical highlights:

Great video. Incredible story.
The story of the elephant giving him money to go to Sri Lanka is almost unbelievable.
Where does he live in Australia?

Nice video. :anjali:
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

I have listened to another video and found that his understanding of Anatta is not up to scratch.

Seems like Godwin Samararatne's meditation moved him away from Goenka, here's what I found

I did my first retreat with Ven. Dhammika back in the early 1980's. That was at Nilambe http://nilambe.net/ Godwin was also there and was mentoring Ven. Dhammika I believe.

Why? What's wrong with his view on anatta? At the closing minute he states that it is not a soul.

When i watched the interview, the most persisting thought in my mind was how unimpressive a wise man appears to be from a worldly point of view.
And the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Behold now, bhikkhus, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

This was the last word of the Tathagata.

I have listened to it again.
I agree that he rejects the notion of self-believed by theistic religions.
But it appears he still take the five aggregate as self and believe in a changing self.
There are many facets of self-view.

not self isn't no soul, never was

that's a misinterpretation, and isn't in the scriptures
