Happy birthday!
Is there any celebration to mark birthdays at your monastery?
In Perth we would get toast for breakfast, as a birthday present! A great luxury.

birth is suffering
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in

Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss

As Ajahn Chah might have said, "True but not right!"

Birth might well be suffering, but this is a birthday.

Correct, but it does have its advantages. One of them is that we learn what is appropriate to say on people's birthdays.

Happy Birthday Bhante :anjali:
And the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Behold now, bhikkhus, I exhort you: All compounded things are subject to vanish. Strive with earnestness!"

This was the last word of the Tathagata.

I don't think learning comes through aging. This idea was levied at the Buddha when he was newly-awakened & still young...

Happy Birthday Bhante!

:namaste:
Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.
