Scholarly Resources

Post by ThankYouJerry »

Hi,

I have studied Madhyamaka for a bit and I would like to find some academic resources from the philosophical Theravada tradition. Can someone point me in the right direction? Sorry if this question sounds naive, I am relatively new to Eastern philosophy.

Thanks so much!

I second this recommendation. It has helped me a lot with many articles/books by prominent practitioners and translations of many suttas.

IOW, take what I say with a grain of salt, for I likely know as little or less than you do.

Hi Jerry

''Theravada' is very diverse & broad. Therefore, it all depends on where or what one wishes to focus on. For example, of one wishes to start with the oldest scriptures (sutta) and from a place of core authenticity, one would begin with those scripture where the Buddha was report to have made decisive statements about what he authentically or uniquely taught, such as:

1st sermon: https://suttacentral.net/en/sn56.11
2nd sermon: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .mend.html
3rd sermon: https://suttacentral.net/en/sn35.28
Simsapa Sutta: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .wlsh.html
Snake Sutta: https://suttacentral.net/en/mn22
Sectarians Sutta: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .than.html
Ani Sutta: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka ... .than.html
MN 38: https://suttacentral.net/en/mn38
Madhyamaka: https://suttacentral.net/en/sn12.15

If one wishes to explore more philosophical Theravada, such as Abdhidhamma or Classical Theravada (Commentaries), this has other sources.
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.
