Ultimate resource guide

Post by BlackBird »

Hi all

I think it would be great to try to collect and compile all the great Dhamma resources on the web into one easy to view basket. I've seen this done on other sites dedicated to knowledge and I think it's a very good idea.

I see we've got a thread in the 'Discovering Theravada' section, on good resources for beginners, and a thread in General Theravada on 'Good resources in foreign languages' but how about an 'Ultimate Resource Guide' in the General Theravada section?

Here is an example of what I Imagine it would look like:
Ultimate Resource Guide

Tipitaka and Discourse
- A2I (site description goes here)
- Mettanet (site description goes here)
- tipitaka.org (explanation goes here)
- etc
- etc

Online teachings and expositions
- Aimwell.org (site description goes here)
- etc
- etc

Ebook collections
- what-buddha-taught
- buddhanet
- etc
- etc

Dhamma Audio
- audiodharma.org
- dhammatalks.org.uk
- ayyakhematalks.org
- etc
- etc

Dhamma video
- dhammatube.googlepages
- etc
- etc

Buddhist News
- buddhistchannel.tv
- etc
- etc
Dhamma blogs (blogs would have to be ratified as good resources)
- theravadin.wordpress
- araft.wordpress
- sdhammika.blogspot
- genkakuagain.blogspot
- etc
-etc

Forums
- Dhammawheel (You are here )
- Dharmawheel
- E-sangha
- Zenforumsinternational
- etc
- etc

Places to acquire printed Dhamma
- amazon
- wisdom pubs
- BPS
- PTS
- WAVE
- etc
- etc

Dana (places to give)
- x
- y
- z

Misc
- Google Saffron
- stuff
- etc
- etc
Posts following the main post could be user contributions and suggestions, but the original post should be used for compiling the resources. The OP should then collect any new resources that the community thinks is good and edit them into the original post.

I'd be happy to have a wee crack at this, but if others think they would like to do it more then that's fine too - It would probably be a bit of work, responsibility and an on going project with community review (to make sure it remains good quality)

What do you think about this? Good idea, bad idea?

Alright, so consensus seems to be that it's not important. That's okay :)

You mentioned W.A.V.E. (Wisdom Audio Visual Exchange). Can you (or anyone) tell me the URL for a current W.A.V.E. website, now that yahoo/geocities is defunct?

Thanks, and Metta,

It would/could/should be a valuable addition to this website... :coffee:

Greetings Blackbird,

If you have the time and energy to put into such a project, you could start a topic, we could 'pin' it for you, and when people make submissions to the topic, you could append the stated resources to your initial post, so that the first post contains a consolidated list of the resources.

Just an idea on how it could work... let us know if you wish to proceed.

Metta,
Retro. :)

Here is a site that already does this (nothing but links to Buddhist sites):

http://buddhistlinks.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But nothing wrong with starting our own version of this, especially if we make it a Theravada focus (the other is pan-Buddhist).

if you want I have a link to a site that sells monastics robes and a couple of other bits to offer
Blog, Suttas, Aj Chah, Facebook.

He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them.
But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion …
...
He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them … he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.

I am sure you could a lot better than the above suggested link.

Sounds like a really good idea. I'm sure I would find such a topic handy.
"If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"
