Is Coconut Oil Overrated?
I've been replacing animal fat in my diet with 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil a day. I like to spread it over toast. Is there any evidence to the claim that coconut oil speeds up metabolism and improves thyroid function?

About half of the fat in coconut oil is from medium chain fatty acids, which are beneficial to human health:

I have no idea. It tastes good on toast though. The myth of saturated fat has been disproven. It's never shown any negative health impacts if it taken within a low sugar diet. I'm actually surprised the heart association has doubled down on this. Since I am watching my weight, I can't justify all the fat and empty calories in coconut oil. Next time, if I want to spread something on my toast, it will be with non-fat cream cheese. If I use coconut oil again, it will be a small amount to grease a frying pan for cooking.

Any food that gets overly hyped is overrated. These companies put a lot of money into advertising these things as being superfoods, etc. It's a joke. Having said that, I like to cook with the stuff occasionally. So, it hasn't been that bad if it's helped expose new foods to people, because before I would have never thought/considered of using the stuff.

i'd like it but it's hard to use without buying a liquid form in which case there's said to be an ingredient missing that makes it 'real' coconut oil, ie u lose the benefits specific to that oil. your basic canola oil is going to do mostly the same thing in my opinion. say if you want to boost your omega 3 ratio (to omega 6) and enjoy fried foods. oil is said to be bad tho because its not a whole food

It is, but it isn't. lol. It's not an all-encompassing cure, but it is extremely healthy. It's great for energy, replacing unhealthy fats, keeping you in shape via its medium chain triglycerides, and detoxing the body via pulling. It's great for your hair and skin too.
And this is coming from a guy who's allergic to coconuts.

hello all.....if you need to gain weight, this is your go to stuff...have a few friends that eat a big spoonful every day and wonder why they're gaining weight...their "minds" are made up....they just know it's good for them and won't hear otherwise....oh well...onward

I started the ketogenic diet for health reasons about 2 months ago. Feel great, lost weight so far. I have been using coconut oil but I guess there are some concerns about health, so I may have to switch to something else. I will also find out my next cholesterol check what I think of it!
