In the case of anesthesia:

The former has not been anesthetized. It is easy to witness and experience the latter.

Upon exiting nirodha you can become an arahant. Upon exiting anesthesia you can become an invalid. This is the difference, brahmin student, between the cessation of perception and feeling and anesthesia.

I remember an experience being described, about a mediator who seemed dead for all intents and purposes, also had no contact/perception of the outside world, but after "waking up", they described a state of clear consciousness for that duration.

My understanding is that the consciousness is there, but not attached to the senses.

So they are conscious, but not conscious of X, Y, Z.
