Posture Question

Posture Question

I cant seem to find a comfortable position to meditate in, Burmese style hurts my knee, quarter- lotus hurts my hips, I cant do any other lotus's.

I tried using a chair but I can keep my back strait and off the back of the chair. I tried putting my zafu on the chair to tilt my pelvis forward and keep my hips above my knees, but then it hurt my butt so much I couldn't sit the full 30 minutes.

I haven't tried seiza, but seiza benches seem kind of expensive.

I get very worried about using the right posture because I don't want to damage any of my joints. Also I've noticed posture can affect how well I'm able to concentrate

Any advice will help,

Hi mddrill,

I think you're right to be concerned. I've talked to a number of monks who damaged their knees through over enthusiasm in their younger days.

Do you have some good cushions? For me, a fairly decent cushion (I use three...) is needed to do Burmese. As in these sites:

(I don't do any lotus positions, but those exercises helped my Burmese position...).

The other thing that helped me was to just sit on the floor a lot (using a cushion). A meditation posture is supposed to be a comfortable, stable, way to sit, so it's good to be used to it outside of actual meditation.
