"There is little aging men, sore backs, poverty, and malice gain through witless mounds. Time lost in INTERWEB; nothing INTERWEBBING, GOOGLING - compared to one morning in candlelight by half hour's plus in reading '1001 Nights' through hardcopy. Learn young men! Truth exists in silence! Poor men's backs break for shame until life is done. A solemn oath I take of abstinence from electronic slavery and its cost entertaining my physical denial of that which is real. Oath INTERNET abstinence. Life's torture beckons heralding the youth of sacralilium. Never does heart pass through days on end - a step into the abyss of a monkey counting sparkling gems by way of marks on a paper written in earth and nothing but."

Renouncing INTERNET thread -
Like the three marks of conditioned existence, this world in itself is filthy, hostile, and crowded

Aflame, with birth, aging & death, with sorrows, lamentations, pains, distresses, & despairs ......

Absolute, pure blasphemy.
He'll be back, everyone always comes back.
Seriously, enjoy the break, delve deeper into the practice and return with greater upekkha (if needed) and then you never need to leave.

I got seriously scared when I saw an end date. Then I realised it was the internet persona.
I hope he is internetly reborn as a man free from rebirth.

Re: Renouncing INTERNET thread -
Actually, the internet has given me a lot of good things. The ability to research antique books and documents easily, for my work. The ability to learn new things at little or no cost. I have availed myself of several learning sites. The ability, through the local library's internet presence, to download ebooks and read them on my computer. The ability to connect with friends at no cost through email. I remember how much I used to pay for long distance phone calls and how that cost caused me to lose contact with old friends because I simply could not afford to talk to them on a regular basis. The ability to keep up with what is happening all over the globe by accessing newspapers from everywhere. And, on the Arts and Letters site, the ability to study many subjects that help to keep my mind functioning well.
I think anything can be used for good or ill, depending on our own attitude towards it. My doctor communicates with me through a dedicated site, allowing me to get care for very little that was not previously available. Sure, the internet can become an incredible time waster if one chooses to let that happen. I have friends and colleagues who choose to spend an inordinate amount of time playing games. That is their choice. The internet also allows me to purchase goods without driving long distances. As a senior citizen, this is a good thing.
So choose to use this technology or not. But it is not, in and of itself, a bad thing. Or a good thing. Just yet another tool to be used in whatever way we choose.

Re: Renouncing INTERNET thread -
Ok im in also
already try to do this several times in the past - even did a bombastic post and returned after a day or two
no doubt at all that its more wholesome to be reading and posting in a buddhist forum like dhamma wheel than to do other stuff - so i think its important that if anyone here fails staying away from the web that he will have no shame and just return to post as usual here at the forum
ok so i give it a try - if i "Fail" than i will just continue posting as usual (what can by a big chance be tomorrow) I wont update here -
see you soon probably ! but there is a small chance i will succeed so in that case : goodbye all , may you find true happiness
