Lava World Baffles Astronomers

Post by Kusala »

"He, the Blessed One, is indeed the Noble Lord, the Perfectly Enlightened One;
He is impeccable in conduct and understanding, the Serene One, the Knower of the Worlds;
He trains perfectly those who wish to be trained; he is Teacher of gods and men; he is Awake and Holy. "

"The Dhamma is well-expounded by the Blessed One,
Apparent here and now, timeless, encouraging investigation,
Leading to liberation, to be experienced individually by the wise. "

The article seems confused. First:
"It couldn't have formed in place because you can't form a planet inside a star. It couldn't have formed further out and migrated inward, because it would have migrated all the way into the star. This planet is an enigma," explains Sasselov.
Then:
Kepler-78b is a doomed world. Gravitational tides will draw it even closer to its star. Eventually it will move so close that the star's gravity will rip the world apart. Theorists predict that Kepler-78b will vanish within three billion years.
It seems we're simply observing it as it slowly spirals into its star, but before it's arrived. What's enigmatic - the happenstance of the timing of the observation?

But perhaps something was lost or added in the press release for some pizazz. Here is another article with a bit more depth on the process of investigation, but no mention of the lack of knowing how it formed.
  • "And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting oneself one protects others? By the pursuit, development, and cultivation of the four establishments of mindfulness. It is in such a way that by protecting oneself one protects others.

    "And how is it, bhikkhus, that by protecting others one protects oneself? By patience, harmlessness, goodwill, and sympathy. It is in such a way that by protecting others one protects oneself.

No. They simply file it under "outdated primitive theories," along with the heliocentric theories accepted in Europe until Renaissance times.

Well, it's interesting that the Brahmanical and Buddhist theory of a multiverse preceded western theorists by several thousands of years.
Kind regards,
Ben.
“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”

loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.

G'day, Ben,
If we continue along these lines we're mixing modern science with ancient thought which made no distinction between religion and science. I don't think it is fair to either of them and I don't think it can lead us anywhere useful.
Can we get back to the topic, which was astronomy?
