any retreat by ajahn brahm in thailand?

Post by awakenedmind »

Hi,
I am interested in attending a retreat by ajahn brahm, as I have read his books and love the way he explains meditation and things.
so, will he be holding a retreat in thailand?

if not, then are any monasteries in thailand in the lineage of ajahn chah,
that hold regular retreats there?
I wish to go for a meditation retreat there, but dont want to get drawn into
the expensive retreats they have there to trap unknowing tourists to get teachings from some fake monk.
so, please let me know about any retreats there.

thanks.

Wat Pah Nanachat, in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand is (probably) the most well known temple in Ajahn Chah's lineage...in Thailand anyway...retreats, not so much, but most anyone welcome...google for lots of info...

"Opening the Door of Your Heart" by Ajahn Brahm

Moments of insight, love and compassion flow through Ajahn Brahm’s stories like rivers of hope. In nearly thirty years as a Buddhist monk, born and educated in the West but trained in the Thai forest tradition, Ajahn Brahm has gathered many poignant, engaging and profound stories from the Buddhist philosophy. He has taught this philosophy to westerners from all walks of life, led meditation groups in Australian prisons, and counselled the distressed, the sick and the bereaved. The stories that emerge, like the experiences they reflect, are thoughtful, funny and Enlightening. Told with wit and wisdom, these tales reveal moments of compassion in the lives of ordinary people, expressing their need to make life meaningful.

oh well !
so ajahn brahm, wont be teaching retreats there.
well any other good teachers holding retreats there.
any recommendations for meditation retreats then, by a good teacher you know of?
maybe somewhere in malaysia or thailand.
I live in India, so these are the places where travelling wont cost so much, hence I chose these places.

so any ideas?

And thanks for the book recommendation.
I have the book "who ordered this truckload of dung?",
which I have read is the same as the book you recommended.
can't understand thai.

I gather from listening to some of his talks that Ajahn Brahm has lead retreats in various places including Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka. I suggest checking out the web site of his monastery: http://dhammaloka.org.au/ There is a forum there where you may be able to get more information.

Hmm,thanks for the replies guys.
I am very sorry for not replying earlier.
was having some tough time at home.

seems like these retreats cost a lot
and I dont have that kind of money.
I am an indian and the currency difference makes these
retreats very very expensive for me.
isn't there some retreat, which is in a monastery
which would be free or maybe cost very little?

Maybe a monastery in the thai forest tradition,
where I wont have to follow many rituals and
just be able to practice more of meditation.

I say thai forest tradition , because I like ajahn brahm's path of letting go
and his methods and he is a theravadan
so I want to be able to go to a monastery which allows and teaches this kind of practice.

I wish to ordain sometime in the future,
and would love it I could be ordained in ajahn brahm's monastery
(bodhinyana, is it?)
but seems like there's a waiting list and they prefer australians
still If I could find the same kind of teachings in a cheaper place like
thailand or malaysia, then I would go for it.

any ideas?

My mind is in a kind of turmoil right now
and I just got to have some peace right now.
my home environment right now is causing me lots of tension
and I find it very difficult to practice meditation in these circumstances.

any ideas would be helpful.
thanks.

Many monasteries will have a sense of quiet and peace where you can meditate. I can't really give you any specifics as I'm from Europe, but what I mean to say is you don't need to go to Bodhinyana or a retreat by Ajahn Brahm to find some peace. Perhaps some place more local that you may think is not so great will turn out to work very well. Also, some of Ajahn Brahm's retreats are recorded and can be found on the internet. You can listen to these at home.

hmm. Thanks for the advice.
What you said is so true.
will do that.
maybe someone can give ideas about some monasteries in thailand
which have temporary ordination or where they would allow me to practice meditation on my own?
