Indeed, I think a phone call to the father-in-law is in order. Though, he is north of Hamilton.
“No lists of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes.”
- Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Learn this from the waters:
in mountain clefts and chasms,
loud gush the streamlets,
but great rivers flow silently.

Seems to be a bit of damage in Wellington, but no reports of death or major structural damage. Fire crews called out to mop up water from burst pipes. One of our ordained posters here Venerable Nyanasuci is currently residing there, it will be interesting to hear from him just how strong they felt it there. There were a couple of other big shakes a few days back measuring in the mid 5s on the magnitude scale, but this one a 6.5 is very large. Just lucky it wasn't that close or shallow to any major urban areas.

He just wrote to me a report from the monastery in Stokes Valley:

Just now: 6.9! It was like being in old train. Had to run out. I does give a sense of urgency. ... I am hearing fire brigades outside. It is still shaking.... another second severe one 5.2.

Thanks for the update Bhante. Hope nothing's fallen off the shelves and been damaged up there.

Did you feel it at all Mike? Nothing down here.

Yes, that was me. Actually it was 9.5. On http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/region/wellington/felt originally said it was 6.9. - it seems they were not sure what strength it had.

No damage here. I felt few minor shaking in the night time. It think the earth is still quite active...

I didn't notice it down here in Christchurch, but some people I know did. Brings up some bad memories listening to the news this morning, Wellington CBD and University campuses closed while buildings are checked... Many problems in the north-east of the South Island. Can only hope that the largest shakes are over...

Well we are in the middle of the North Island and thankfully no shaking here . One guy was in a movie theater at the time it hit and rushed out side....it was one of those apocalyptic movies , he could see the humorous irony of it .
NZ is just one big fault line , and it never lets us forget it .

Kia kaha whanau.

I work for an insurance broker so the last few years since the first Christchurch event have been pretty harrowing for so many people.
Mother earth will do what it do so comfort and encouragement ...

Hope you are all well :yingyang:
