Hi - Buddhist Bible

Post by JueJueBean »

Hello everyone,

My name is Julian, I'm from Canada, i've been a Buddhist for three and a half years now and, no offence to this forum but; I was looking for a Buddhist forum for some guidance and I saw this had the most members so I figured it was the best place for a global perspective. Now I see that it focuses on Theravada Dhamma.... So I don't know if this is the right forum for General Buddhism talks... but none the less.

I am here because I am trying to put together a "Buddhist Bible" so to speak because I was tried of looking for individual Sutras and Mantras scattered around. Call it blasphemous if u want, but, coming from a Christian background, I don't see why all the sutras of the Buddha cant be in one place, even if the schools disagree. If anyone can or would like to help to organize this "Buddhist Manuscript (Bible) please tell me. Some questions I had were, what should be included, and in what order.

I already have it in 3(ish) parts. Life of the Buddha, Buddhist Beliefs, Teachings of the Buddha, and Buddhist Mantras.... anyone know anything else that should be included. Right now it's over 1000 pages long.

Thanks!

PS: I would like it to be read by any school of Buddhism... I don't like when things split.

There already is a Buddhist "Bible" known as the Tipitaka or Pali Canon (Theravada) and Tripitaka for Mahayana.

Sounds more like you're assembling a Buddhist catechism rather than a Bible.

Welcome.

If you want to create a sutta collection that will appeal to all sects then make sure you choose texts that talk about the foundational aspects of Buddhism - the Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, dependent arising, three marks ect.
"If beings knew, as I know, the results of giving & sharing, they would not eat without having given, nor would the stain of miserliness overcome their minds. Even if it were their last bite, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared."

Ok so what makes a catechism and what makes a bible... The life of the Buddha is comparable to the Gospel of the Bibe. It has the Sutras so.... that like the bible... ...

It is just that each school of Buddhism has it's own "bible". In the Theravada tradition this is the Pali Tipitaka. I would call what you are trying to do a sutta collection or anthology.
"If beings knew, as I know, the results of giving & sharing, they would not eat without having given, nor would the stain of miserliness overcome their minds. Even if it were their last bite, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared."

Ok but lets say there was a universal accepted set of Buddhist teahcings..

What would you guys put in it?

I have every Sutra spoken by the Buddha, I have the story of his life and awakening..... but I feel like im missing. Do I need a section with quotes, or rules for the Monks? or Mantras...

What books would u like to see in a Buddhist Bible and in what order...
