Don't look down on the Defilements - sayadaw U Tejaniya

Post by cooran »

Hello all,

A short, to the point, booklet on the Defilements :-
"Don't look down on the Defilements - they will laugh at you" by Sayadaw U Tejaniya

Good booklet, I really like his relaxed style.
I am also enjoying his other book, Awareness Alone is Not Enough.
Available free here;

I'm slowly working through it one delicious question at a time.
Then,
saturated with joy,
you will put an end to suffering and stress.

New Zealand members may be interested that Sayadaw will be leading a retreat near Auckland in November:
http://www.temoata.org/Retreats_Printable.html

This short talk by Steve Armstrong:
Dhamma Lessons - Complementary Practice Traditions
http://www.dharmaseed.org/teacher/170/talk/18905/
discusses how Sayadaw U Tejaniya's approach differed from what he'd been practising and teaching.
[The start of the talk may not sound like the right talk. Give it time...]

I had a paper copy but when I left to go travelling, I gave it back to the person who gave it to me; then I put the PDF of it in my kindle.

Woah, $850 plus dana for ten days. That's the most expensive retreat I've ever seen in New Zealand.
I guess they know the demographic they are targeting, because nobody else but a very small group will be able or interested in attending at that price.

Would have been keen, but $850 + $200 registration is a little out of my price range, out of mostly everyone's price range I suspect.

Hi Chris

I got this "totally incorrect information" from the website of the retreat centre where the retreat is being held - The link that Mike posted. Perhaps you should contact them, and let them know their information is totally incorrect?
Dhamma Everywhere - Welcoming each moment with Awareness+Wisdom
An Insight meditation retreat with Sayadaw U Tejaniya

Sayadaw U Tejaniya began practicing meditation in his early teenage years under the late Shwe OO Min Sayadaw(1912-2002) ,ordaining several times as a novice monk. He took robe in 1996 after life as a householder and business man. He is now the meditation teacher of the Shwe OO Min Dhamma Sukha Tawya meditation center in Yangon, Myanmar (Burma).

Sayadaw’s style of teaching is dynamic – an evolving process based on his own experiences and recognition of difficulties yogis face in their practice. With his easy sense of humor and relaxed demeanor, Sayadaw relates naturally to his lay students, helping them to appreciate the presence of dhamma everywhere with awareness + wisdom. Sayadaw travels extensively giving guidance to teachers and students at various centres throughout the world. This retreat is a rare opportunity to sit with one of the worlds foremost insight meditation teachers.

Please go to link to read more on Sayadaw U Tejaniya:

Hello Blackbird,

So this is for a different retreat - one in New Zealand?
Thought you were talking about the Australian one in Perth.

Yes, my post was in response to Mike's post. James also made a similar comment about the $850 figure. I hadn't even noticed your post about an Australian retreat until just now, if I had noticed I would have added a quote of Mike's to avoid such confusion.

For a working person even $800 is possible to save over the coming months, I would've thought. But if not, generally the organisers are flexible in special circumstances, I found.

Still it is interesting that the Australian retreat is less than half the price of the NZ. Maybe for the Australian one, they are getting the venue for free and in NZ they have to pay for the hire?

The centre they are holding it at used to be in private hands but was sold to a charitable trust a few years ago, I think they have to work hard to get enough funds to operate.

I read it $850 including $200 deposit btw.

At that price it's probably cheaper for me to fly to perth ironically, though if I go to Burma I'd get a longer retreat.

At the NZ place, they recently offered a one week non-buddhist retreat valued at FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS! For one week.
"Tailor your week to your own needs: adventurous, reflective or pampered. Choose optional activities to
enhance your experience ranging from guided nature walks, pampering massage and spa, yoga
and meditation, gourmet picnics, and local adventures on land and water."
http://temoata.org/Retreats_2011_files/ ... 0Flyer.pdf

So yeah, I think the hire of the venue might play a role in the price.
I don't know how much it costs to hire Jhana Grove for 10 days... I'll ask the manager next time I see her.
Then,
saturated with joy,
you will put an end to suffering and stress.
