Having read Hammalawa Saddhatissa's Buddhist Ethics, yes, I highly recommend it.kiwimark wrote:Am thinking of ordering a book on buddhist ethics. So l'm wondering which is the more insightful author.

Liberation is the inevitable fruit of the path and is bound to blossom forth when there is steady and persistent practice. The only requirements for reaching the final goal are two: to start and to continue. If these requirements are met there is no doubt the goal will be attained. This is the Dhamma, the undeviating law.

Re: buddhist ethics
The Nature of Buddhist Ethics, by Damien Keown, is a fine read. He plays a tad fast and loose with the Theravada-Mahayana textual divide, but the point he makes about the pairing of Sila-Panna is worth reading over. I'd get it from a library, rather than buy it.
Peter Harvey is a good author elsewhere (The Selfless Mind), but I'm not certain of his ethical thought. I have one of his books in my to-read pile, I'll get back to you.

Re: buddhist ethics
Hello Kim, all,
I searched on Google for the Journal of Buddhist Ethics: http://jbe.la.psu.edu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And one of the results said this:
1. 913 - CAN - Collections Australia Network - Collections
http://www.collectionsaustralia.net/col ... search.php?.." onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
Records 9121 - 9130 of 64364 – ISSN: 1076-9005 http://scorpio.gold.ac.uk/jbe/jbe.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; http://jbe.la.psu.edu Link no longer valid as of May 23, ...
Huge website though and couldn’t find the bit above.

Re: buddhist ethics
Thanks, Cooran,
I did a bit more poking around on the net. Every link that doesn't end up in a dead end points to the site I found - http://blogs.dickinson.edu/buddhistethics/ which is hosted http://blogs.dickinson.edu/ by Dickinson College http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dickinson_College, down the road from Penn State University which used to host the Journal.
This site - http://www.globethics.net/web/journal-o ... ist-ethics - says it has all of the JBE online but I haven't tried to register on it.
But I didn't find any explanation for the changes.

Thanks.
1. --> more ethical theory.
2. --> buddhist responses to questions of ethics.
3. --> more traditional buddhist sila.
If you really want Buddhist ethics, I'd go for door number 2.
