There are many forms of protection, and not just against external military aggression. One important way to protect a country is to ensure that its young people grow up strong, honest, and brave, and compassionate. This is a big problem with some Western countries at the moment, and without it, the country collapses from the inside while potential enemies look on and laugh.

The only way is for one country to rule the entire world......it would still require a hefty police force however.

The best way I can think of is to be a very small country and have no resources the big guys want. Make your country attractive to the rich and famous, who will want to live there and can pay to have their peace and quiet.

Oh, and don't have a border with Russia or China.

Then there would still be warfare, it would just be known as civil wars.

Monaco?

One good way to protect a country is with free and open trade. Trading partners don't go to war as often as nations isolated and not involved in trade.

Not possible. That is why Muslims invaders from Persia demolished Buddhism in India in 11th century.

If there is no effective military this is pretty good substitute at thwarting enemy

Also have a powerful ally to act as deterrent ..

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. Also Lichtenstein, Switzerland, British Virgin Islands, etc.

Then this is enough .. 80 of them with 15 megaton Castle Bravo size warheads .. you won't need a military .. just some technicians to maintain and use them.

Instantly vaporizes anyone who is too close for comfort .. great deterrent.

Yes, BVI is actually a British Overseas Territory. I was thinking of it more in terms of a place money hides.

The Vatican is an ecclesiastical state, basically a theocracy. There are no passport controls to enter Vatican City, so it's kind of a special case. Money hides here, too.

There are some countries where national service/civil service is geared towards social service, civil duties, helping distribute aid, and assisting in disasters, floods, etc. King Asoka, after his conversion to Buddhism, had all his soldiers focus on helping the poor and protecting those in need. Of course, that leaves you vulnerable to someone who comes in with hostile intentions. But that's the world for you.
