Do we take this lifetime knowledge to the next life?

Post by SarathW » Wed Jan 15, 2020 8:56 am

Do we take this lifetime knowledge to the next life?

Ven. Vijithanada argues that we accumulate a lot of knowledge (sanna or perception) from childhood to adulthood.
He said, contrary to popular belief, we do not take this knowledge to the next life.
For instance, all the Dhamma book knowledge you gathered by reading will come to an end at your death.
But venerable argues that it is better to acquire the knowledge than accumulating bad Kamma.

What is your opinion?

I'm sceptical concerning all such claims. We cannot know. Even if someone claims to know, I am sceptical of their claim.

We can reflect on two points, though. The first is that we didn't seem to bring any knowledge from a previous life into this life. We may have brought the conditions for that knowledge (either the objects of that knowledge, or the intellectual capacity to develop it) but if that is so, then it is very different from how we usually use the term.

The second point is that our accumulation of knowledge in this life is not straightforward. We forget huge amounts. Some people think that we retain everything on a level which is normally inaccessible - see accounts of our "whole life passing before our eyes" at point of death - but even this would be more akin to "experience" than knowledge. If we speak to very elderly people, do they normally appear to be very knowledgeable?

Memory from previous life is supressed by the process of birth via womb. Beings who are born spontaneously retains their memory of their past lives. One such example can bee seen in the case of the hungry ghosts: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitak ... .than.html

Please note in this discussion the main point is that we do not carry the perception (Sanna) to the next life.

Hello:

The suttas show that we take some sannas or perceptions to the next life.
Some gathi or habits, some asavas or cravings. Not all of them.

Dhamma book knowledge will probably not be remembered unless what is being readed is internalized and leads to new habits.
Anyways perceptions are related to feelings. If someone feels a certain feeling, it can lead to remembering something related to that feeling.
Thats the whole deal with remembering past lifes in the fourth jhana. Reading its kind of a neutral feeling unless it really brings emotions, maybe that way someone can remember a past life reading some sutta.

Regards.

Topic is highly speculative, but cases with kids remembering their past lives give some answers. And, as for rebirth as devas, there is this: https://suttacentral.net/an4.191/en/sujato

Say I learned Basic computer language some time back.
There is no use of that for me now or even in the next life.
Many things we learn obsolete fast.

Anything you do,
will create a tendency to do it again.

Not knowledge, just conditioning.

Kiriya Citta is kammically ineffective.
For instance the action of Arahant.
