Braun shows thatAmerican mindfulness is the product of two traditions of Theravadin insight meditation (vipassana) which tracetheir roots to colonial Burma: those deriving from the Burmese monk Mahasi Sayadaw and the Indian layman S. N.Goenka. But Goenka was a disciple of U Ba Khin, who was a disciple of U Po Thet, who was in turn a disciple of LediSayadaw and Mahasi Sayadaw was a disciple of Mingun Sayadaw, the meditative teachings of whom were fashioned in a sphere of lay religiosity created and pervaded by the influence of Ledi Sayadaw. The origins of the mindfulness movement, East and West, are thus rooted in Ledi Sayadaws modernizing efforts. Meditation, as taught by Ledi, was heavily influenced by Abhidhamma scholasticism, with a focus on insight or knowledge (panna) rather than meditative absorption (jhana, samadhi).

Does the review mention "sati" as "governance" (ādhipateyya) over what is "wholesome" & "unwholesome"? Or does the review merely refer to "non-judgmental awareness"?
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.
