Re-birth is like having your own baby (child)

Post by SarathW » Wed Apr 18, 2018 10:38 am

I think re-birth is like having your own baby (child).
Your child is not you but not someone else.
The only difference is that re-birth occurs after your death.
You can't exist in two places the same time. Can we?

Your child is someone else.
I think this is Attaditthi.
I may be wrong though.

I think that attaditthi is a belief or view. If upon reading "your child is someone else" the view of attaditthi arises then it has arisen. If upon reading "your child is someone else" some other view arises then some other view arises.

Attaditthi is a view which might arise upon reading something; it is not the thing which was read. Thinking that attaditthi is contained in a piece of text or that a piece of text IS attaditthi is another kind of self assumption I think.

I think that there might be some confusion surrounding this because the text "your child is someone else" does not contain any context as to whether the discussion will be within the realm of right view with effluents or right view without effluents. Right view with effluents is a kind of view dealing with worldly matters like "there is mother and father"....so with respect to right view with effluents one would talk about different people being different people. Right view without effluents does not deal directly with these worldly presentations but rather deals with mental factors etc. dealing directly with liberation from worldly matters and it might respond to "your child is someone else" by reminding one of the not self doctrine.

While it is not impossible for there to be some crossover between these two kinds of views (and in fact I think that it is helpful to direct discernment towards that) it can also be confusing and lead to disagreement based on different people either approaching from rv/with effluents or rv/without effluents.

Further I think that for me that trying to rationalize the two kinds of right view with discussion does not lead to much and discussion for me is best kept to either one or the other while for me the crossover implications are best understood through direct experience.

susukhaṁ vata nibbānaṁ,
sammāsambuddhadesitaṁ;
asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ,
yattha dukkhaṁ nirujjhatī

Oh! extinction is so very blissful,
As taught by the One Rightly Self-Awakened:
Sorrowless, stainless, secure;
Where suffering all ceases

etaṁ santaṁ etaṁ paṇītaṁ yadidaṁ sabbasaṅkhārasamatho sabbūpadhipaṭi nissaggo taṇhakkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbānaṁ

This is peaceful, this is excellent, that is: the stilling of all preparations, the relinquishment of all attachments, the destruction of craving, detachment, cessation, extinction.

In one case genes are transmitted, in the other kamma is transmitted?
Buddha save me from new-agers!

The way I understand Kamma does not transmit.
Kamma has Vipaka.

Hello:

I think that analogy its right in the sense that it was anatta perspective, you personally are not being reborn.
But on the other side, the same analogy feels like its taking away responsibility for your own actions, and the Buddha taught quite the opposite.

Regards.

In my opinion, you will become more responsible.
Will you do something bad today if you know someone else is going to suffer tomorrow because of your action?
Don't you have the love and ownership of your child?
