The Sun and other Cosmic Bodies in Buddhist Cosmology

Post by LG2V »

This thread is a bit speculative. Does anyone else think that the sun and other stars could be higher planes of existence, such as Brahma worlds? They do resemble meditative nimittas, and they are radiant like how many of the jhana states are described.

Or they could be great hells. I'm not sure. But I assume that those are generally at the Earth's core.

Then there's the possibility that Sumeru is actually the earth's magnetic field.

But, there are plenty of things out there that we still don't know about, such as dark matter and other yet discovered components of the cosmos. I'm curious about you guys' opinions.

Probably not cuz the sun and other physical stars' life span are quite short on a cosmic time scale (it'll die out in a few billion years), while the life span of a single heavenly being's already typically a few aeons (AN 4.123). So odds are that the devas, hell realms are in some parallel universes but not part of our physical observable universe with its solar systems and galaxies.

Agree.
Perhaps they are living in a two dimensional or one-dimensional world.

Good points. Does anyone have recommendations for viewing divine realms while in meditation?

Feel free to pm me.

Thanks for the tip Kim. I'll look into it. I love the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Monks' approach to Buddhism and modern science. They offer a lot of great insights.
