I have heard teachers characterize papanca (mental proliferation) as "getting on the train of association," and suggest that one stay on the train platform and know the trains as they go by, rather than getting on the train and ending up somewhere else completely, unaware of how you got there.
Edit: Another possible way to think of it is that grasping is "associated with" pleasant vedana, etc., etc.
So the continuous process of contact, vedana, grasping, etc. is a type of "association."
