Does mental association has its place in Buddhist psychology?

Can you explain a bit about what you mean when you write "mental association"?

I have heard teachers characterize papanca (mental proliferation) as "getting on the train of association," and suggest that one stay on the train platform and know the trains as they go by, rather than getting on the train and ending up somewhere else completely, unaware of how you got there.

Edit: Another possible way to think of it is that grasping is "associated with" pleasant vedana, etc., etc.
So the continuous process of contact, vedana, grasping, etc. is a type of "association."
Those who grasp at perceptions & views wander the internet creating friction. [based on Sn4:9,v.847]
