Zen is Mahayana so it is practiced within the framework of becoming a Buddha. Pali cannon is Hinayana so the goal is stream entry, once return, non-return, then arahantship.

It may be helpful to point out that Zen Buddhists believe they are teaching Gotama’s teachings. There is an old Chinese to the effect that “Zen word is sutra word is Buddha word is true word or true word is Buddha word is sutra word is Zen word.” Another basic phrase in Chinese Buddhism warns against mistaking the finger that points at the moon for the moon. For example, an overly literal interpretation of the Buddha’s that miss the point or intent of the words is an example of mistaking the map for the actual territory or the finger for the moon. Various methods of meditation and different emphasis on different points of Buddhist teachings are appropriate for different people as different medicines are appropriate for different patients. Insisting that every patient take exactly the same medication transforms medicine into poison. From this perspective, Buddhism (in this case, Zen Buddhism) is not dependent on words as the moon is not dependent on the finger that points at it, but is certainly not opposed to them. You may agree or disagree, but the question does not work in a Zen Buddhist context.

Regarding all these many views just as temporary pointers will help you grasp the intent behind them. Let them go and look at the moon which is the same no matter how many different fingers point at it.
