VBB wrote a strong difficult to refute article (The Jhānas and the Lay Disciple According to the Pāli Suttas) based on the suttas about how the stream-enterer has not attained jhana. The more lofty we imagine the path to be; the more the essential basics are missed.
11. Those who mistake the unessential to be essential and the essential to be unessential, dwelling in wrong thoughts, never arrive at the essential.

12. Those who know the essential to be essential and the unessential to be unessential, dwelling in right thoughts, do arrive at the essential.

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.
