This quote is an excellent expression on the perspective on SN 22.59 that we've been discussing in this thread:
Thanissaro Bhikkhu wrote:The Buddha himself pointed out that the highest sense of oneness is the sense of consciousness being totally one and single, when everything in the range of your consciousness becomes one. But, he said, even in that sense of oneness, there is inconstancy. There is stress. It’s not totally under your control.

The Buddha wrote: But because consciousness is nonself, consciousness leads to affliction, and it is not possible to have it of consciousness: ‘Let my consciousness be thus; let my consciousness not be thus.’

Of course, as Thanissaro Bhikkhu goes on to say, the path does involve work. One can't just drop the illusions immediately unless one is already as developed as the five companions, and can attain liberation by just reflecting on the above sutta...

Whatever you control is not you but appearing to itself.
Remember… the Buddha had said that everyone living in this world is crazy, by the phrase, “Sabbē prutajjana ummattakā”; excluding the Arahants, everyone else is crazy. Would you get angry if a mad person scolds? Do we get angry for a crazy thing done by a crazy person? Just think about it! :candle:
