Finding a Jhana retreat in Asia?

Post by squizzlebizzle »

Hello everyone

I am interested in going on a meditation retreat. I would like to find a Jhana retreat, I live in East Asia, I don't mind traveling for it.

It's easy enough to find Goenka retreats, other retreats I really have not been able to find.

I'm also interested in doing any other Buddhist retreats that someone has information for. I just have not had much luck finding information on retreats in Asia that are in English.

If anyone has any resources to share, please do!

Your last post was about issue with demons, so i would suggest that you volunteer as a helper in a temple, let yourself settle down first, before talking about Jhana.

Ah, yes. If you already have encounters with spirits and demons, doing a jhana retreat is almost guaranteed to intensify that, and bring more.

I agree with the others, instead focus on right view, 5 precepts, virtue training and brahma viharas.

Also a sutta on not so nice spirits

I am already practicing the precepts, metta, brahmaviharas, cultivating virtue.

The Buddha did not give up his search for enlightenment because he was pursued by Mara. He never taught to wait until there are no obstacles to walk the path. He taught to walk it right now.

Thank you JamestheGiant, I will look up Pa Auk.

Thank you Budo, I will read this Sutta closely.

Please do not be discouraged by the advices above. Please pursue meditation. However, as I suggested previously, try to shine virtue upon any non-virtuous deed committed against you. Please remember, the Lord Buddha & His Arahant Disciples called Mara the Wicked One.
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

yes best place I can also recomand is PA Auk, but choose the proper season you going there. because if you go in hot season you might struggle a lot to adjust. may be the end of wassa period might be better. PA AUK in Pyin oo Lwin is cooler.

This is the picture of the new extension. I think you are looking at 15 to 20% of the combined land. The food is good, the kuties are good, the climate is good. The teachers are good. Everything is quite good about this new section. There is a waiting list to get in with special forms that need to be filled out. Don’t ask me how.

The main purpose of this particular meditation center is to train international monks. So, extra effort has been made to provide conditions that are above Myanmar standards. Without to much exaggeration, one could say it is a kind of "VIP vihara" or "VIP monastery".

I reckon the retreat would be a "Jhana" retreat if your meditation is "jhana" meditation. Otherwise it would be just a shamatha or mindfulness retreat. :)
