"In the case of a monk who has died & passed away, his bodily fabrication has ceased & subsided, verbal fabrication has ceased & subsided, mental fabrication has ceased & subsided, his life force is totally ended, his heat is dissipated, and his faculties are shut down. But in the case of a monk who has attained the cessation of perception & feeling, his bodily fabrication has ceased & subsided, verbal fabrication has ceased & subsided, mental fabrication has ceased & subsided, his life force is not ended, his heat is not dissipated, and his faculties are bright & clear. This is the difference between a monk who has died & passed away and a monk who has attained the cessation of perception & feeling."

In the case of anesthesia:

His bodily fabrication has ceased & subsided, verbal fabrication has ceased & subsided, mental fabrication has ceased & subsided, his life force is not ended, his heat is not dissipated, and his faculties are shut down.

The difference is bright and clear!

No, but the point is they are unconscious.

Consciousness is suspended (unconscious) for a person in Nirodha Samapatti as well.

The former has not been anesthetized. It is easy to witness and experience the latter.

Upon exiting nirodha you can become an arahant. Upon exiting anesthesia you can become an invalid. This is the difference, brahmin student, between the cessation of perception and feeling and anesthesia. :D

Not sure ...
his faculties are bright & clear
I remember an experience being described, about a mediator who seemed dead for all intents and purposes, also had no contact/perception of the outside world, but after "waking up", they described a state of clear consciousness for that duration.

My understanding is that the consciousness is there, but not attached to the senses.

So they are conscious, but not conscious of X, Y, Z.
