Space Kasina meditation and jhana

Post by confusedlayman » Mon Jan 20, 2020 5:47 pm

Anyone tried focusing on space? If I place my mind on space, I get loss of stress as space has no character and hence it’s neutral but can it take me to 1st jhana or atleast directly to 5th jhana so if I descend from that I go 4,3.2.1 using 5th jhana as entry point and descend instead of ascend .

living unaffected by other cause and condition to suffering is true bliss
not associating with stupid people is immediate peace

Yes, I practice Space contemplation in terms of Cula Sunnata Sutta and Maha Sunnata Sutta.
I am not claiming that I have attained any sort of Jhana by this though.
================
"Further, Ananda, the monk — not attending to the perception of wilderness, not attending to the perception of earth — attends to the singleness based on the perception of the dimension of the infinitude of space. His mind takes pleasure, finds satisfaction, settles, & indulges in its perception of the dimension of the infinitude of space.

"He discerns that 'Whatever disturbances that would exist based on the perception of wilderness are not present. Whatever disturbances that would exist based on the perception of earth are not present. There is only this modicum of disturbance: the singleness based on the perception of the dimension of the infinitude of space.' He discerns that 'This mode of perception is empty of the perception of wilderness. This mode of perception is empty of the perception of earth. There is only this non-emptiness: the singleness based on the perception of the dimension of the infinitude of space.' Thus he regards it as empty of whatever is not there. Whatever remains, he discerns as present: 'There is this.' And so this, his entry into emptiness, accords with actuality, is undistorted in meaning, & pure.

Underlying stress arises because space is pure. If focus on space can be maintained, the stress will dissolve, eventually.

Yes. However, before jhana, focus on space will naturally connect with breathing.
There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

I get loss of stress as space
Another reason is that you have overcome by five hindrances.
You should get their by first practicing Sila or perhaps practicing Brahmavihara.

Should I focus on breath or maintain perceiving space?

There is no need to deliberately focus on breath. Perceiving space is preferable. Even if perceiving breath comes naturally into awareness, continue to perceive space, if possible.
