According to Ajahn Brahm, deep meditation can be attained in the most unorthodox positions.
Just be comfortable, according to the characteristics of your body. If you can sit cross-legged with the back erect, that's fine. If you cannot and you need a chair, that's fine. If you are walking or laying down, that's fine.

Not only should that joint be straightened as much as one can - it should be in a position where one can let go of dukkha there from. The SI joint is the absolute key to achieving rapture during meditation - and also for achieving rapture as a element of enlightenment in later meditations. In fact, the truth is that consciousness released from the SI joint is the factor of rapture!

Re: Physical posture during seated meditation
It is said that Anando thero attained arhant status in meditation but in a posture between seating and lying down . He was also known to have been in meditation in all 4 postures standing sitting walking and lying ( sleeping posture).
Such description of Ananda thero is found in " Great desciples of lord budda" by Rev. Nyanaponika thero.
Re: Physical posture during seated meditation
Perhaps for Vipassana meditation, the posture may not be important.
