Gender Equality Poll

Post by Eko Care » Sun May 05, 2019 11:28 am

Gender equality is a widely discussed topic not only in the global context but also in Theravada communities.
I thought it is good to know each other's opinion on this regard.

If you have time, please describe the reasons for your choice.

What do you mean by a superior?
According to Buddhist teaching, both male and female both can attain Nibbana. (highest)
When you attain Nibbana you eliminate all measurements (mana) such as gender equality as it not applies.

@Eko Care: please find a way to tie this topic into the study of Theravada or the topic will be removed. Otherwise it is nothing but a socio-political conversation that would better be suited for another of our sister sites, Dhamma Wheel Engaged.

Thank you

Hello Eko ,

Here's an example you link it to the sutta or teaching ,

The text says , if one view ourself or something in term of inferior , superior and equal that is conceit . If there is an attachment , thus the view of " I am better , worse or parallel " would arise .

https://suttacentral.net/sn35.108/en/bodhi

I am Superior

“Bhikkhus, when what exists, by clinging to what, by adhering to what, does the thought occur: ‘I am superior’ or ‘I am equal’ or ‘I am inferior’?”

“Venerable sir, our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One….”

“When there is the eye, bhikkhus, by clinging to the eye, by adhering to the eye, the thought occurs: ‘I am superior’ or ‘I am equal’ or ‘I am inferior.’ When there is the ear … When there is the mind, by clinging to the mind, by adhering to the mind, the thought occurs: ‘I am superior’ or ‘I am equal’ or ‘I am inferior.’

“What do you think, bhikkhus, is the eye … the mind permanent or impermanent?”

“Impermanent, venerable sir.”…

“But without clinging to what is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, could the thought occur: ‘I am superior’ or ‘I am equal’ or ‘I am inferior’?”

“No, venerable sir.”

“Seeing thus … He understands: ‘… there is no more for this state of being.’”

In terms of attaining full awakening, full enlightenment both men and women are capable of that and have done that.

In terms of sport, especially strength type sports, men are far superior. On average men have more muscle mass than women. Look at the weightlifting world records, the men's records are about 50% more weight lifted than the comparable weight class records for women.

In terms of academics and intelligence also equal. Historically there have been more men in sciences, math, noble prize winners, but this has more to do with culture, with women being taught at a young age to pursue culturally "pink collar" jobs. This has been rapidly changing however, in recent years with women earning more advanced degrees than men.

Both are good at different things, on average, but both should be equal before the law and have equality of opportunity.

Comparative superiority in Qualities (Wisdom,Virtue, ..etc.)
According to Dhamma, there is no superior sex in this matter. Both men and women may have poorly developed indriyas or strongly developed. However, again according to Dhamma, woman can never be a Buddha, only an arahant.

Both women and men have strengths and weaknesses.
However, my observation is men are more extream than women.

Interestingly, Sarath, Larry Summers had the same observation:
Larry Summers wrote: It does appear that on many, many different human attributes-height, weight, propensity for criminality, overall IQ, mathematical ability, scientific ability-there is relatively clear evidence that whatever the difference in means-which can be debated-there is a difference in the standard deviation, and variability of a male and a female population. And that is true with respect to attributes that are and are not plausibly, culturally determined. If one supposes, as I think is reasonable, that if one is talking about physicists at a top twenty-five research university, one is not talking about people who are two standard deviations above the mean. And perhaps it's not even talking about somebody who is three standard deviations above the mean. But it's talking about people who are three and a half, four standard deviations above the mean in the one in 5,000, one in 10,000 class.
He also perceives men to be more extreme than women. If you look further into the matter, you'll see that Larry got in trouble, because saying such things means you are a bad boy. We are all identical clones in every respect, remember.

In order to answer this question, we have to know (or specify) on which dimension one sex is superior to the other. Women are superior on some dimensions, men on others.

Well, we can wax lyrical about 'physicists at a top-twenty five research university', as if we are part of this exalted club or have anything to do with by virtue of being male (maybe some vicarious glory will rub off on us?), but in actuality, so many factors go into making a top physicist that we have no idea 3.5 standard deviation right of what exactly??? Richard Feynman apparently had a pedestrian IQ in low 130's.

I don't know. I fully admit the possibility that on average there are differences between men and women. What does this mean though for us? For individual men and women? Nothing really. It may be useful info for people who create policies that affect thousands where statistics come into play, but that's about it.

Greetings,

Regarding someone as better, worse or equal is mana, conceit.

On that basis, this poll appears ill-advised.
