28 Buddhas Puja and Largest Samadhi Statue in Western Hemisphere

Post by Aniccato » Sun Sep 22, 2019 1:14 pm

This is from the Sri Lankan temple I go to for meditation and Pāli chanting and Dhamma talks. Last night we held the 28 Buddhas Puja. Here’s a short video for you attached to see if you enjoy such things.

The video didn't play for me. Can you post a photo? Where is the largest samadhi statue in Western Hemisphere?

Here you go sir. It is located in Princeton/Franklin New Jersey. If you are ever visiting the North East it is definitely worth a visit. It’s very serene and inspiring.

The new Temple/Meditation Center is in progress. The monks here are still utilizing a 1960’s house as their meditation center and vihara. Once we finish fund raising the remaining 500k or so, the new center will be capable of supporting 400-500 meditators and visitors at a time.

Here is their website with location details etc.: http://www.njbv.org/

It's pretty, but it's not very big. I'm very surprised it's the largest in the western hemisphere.
Anyway, thanks for the nice photos!

You’re very welcome. And agreed. It’s dwarfed by most Eastern Buddha statues. Apparently not too many temples this side of the world have them. This one “only” stands at 30 foot high counting the lotus flower pedestal below the Buddha.

Here is a list of tallest statues in the world and you're right, the super tall (Buddhist) ones are all in Asia.

I could have sworn I saw some pretty big ones in Canada, but I guess they were all under 30 feet.

Well now I’m keen to find out if their claim to fame is still actual as they erected it in 2009 or so, if memory serves me correctly.

After some intense(2 mins searching google 😂), it seems we have some intense competition cooking up here. The Mt Carmel temple claims a 37 foot Buddha statue. However I don’t know if they are counting the tall elevated platform the Buddha rests on.

The cool thing about this particular Samadhi Buddha statue, is that the monk from Sri Lanka who made it, did so entirely by memory using his hands to bend the thin rebar. He would bend the rebar into shape then pour cement into the rebar and shape it all by hand. Takes longer as one can imagine, but adds a little love and flavor to the story of the statue.

Not the tallest Buddha statue, but the tallest Buddhist statue in North America (and probably the Western Hemisphere) is a 72 foot tall statue of Guan Yin.

I'd like to visit that temple some day. It has that beautiful statue and also it's almost exactly the other side of the planet from Maha Bodhi Temple in India. See this post I made over at DWM:

(Guan Yin is primarily a Mahayana figure, but Theravadins have been known to venerate her too.)

Ajahn Anan, a well known direct disiple of Ajahn Chah, I believe has a statue of Guan Yin at his temple in Thailand. As does Ajahn Achalo.
