I just thought to browse & see what has been posted lately on Youtube. The video at the top of the list is "paid advertising". It current has 8,898,114 views, since 29 July 2018, with 492 comments. Every comment I saw (which was not many) was in Thai. The most recent comments are positive. Its an Ajahn Buddhasasa replication. Press CC for English subtitles. What do we think of paid advertising Buddhism?

There is always an official executioner. If you try to take his place, It is like trying to be a master carpenter and cutting wood. If you try to cut wood like a master carpenter, you will only hurt your hand.

Re: Paid advertising Buddhism - 8,898,114 YouTube views
Greetings,
In each instance, there's Buddhist content that people are helping to get in front of those who may be interested in, and benefit from it.
So long as it's targeted so as to find Buddhists online, rather than to hound, harass and proselytise to those of other religions, I have no problem with it.
Metta,
Paul.
I see it as analogous to donating towards the publication of Dhamma books.

That video has almost 9 million views but not a single 'like' or 'dislike'? That seems strange, unless the like feature can be disabled?
I have heard that one can promote videos by paying some companies to add views to your videos (making it appear more popular than it is), although I think that would be deceptive and unethical.
Otherwise though, if that's not the case, I think it's good to promote the Dhamma in all venues possible in a non-pushy way, which youtube would be as someone has to choose to watch it.

The problem we have today in Buddhism in not having enough Buddhist, but not having enough practicing Buddhist who understand Buddha's teaching.
We do not have to advertise the fully blossom flowers to the bees.
Having said that Buddha was a missionary who sent his first 60 Arahants for Dhamma propagation.
Generally I promote Dhamma Wheel when I watch Dhamma related videos.

I just googled it and posting this here in case anyone else wondered about this too. Apparently you can turn off the like/dislike function on videos you make. Good to know.DNS wrote: ↑Thu Jan 03, 2019 11:48 pm That video has almost 9 million views but not a single 'like' or 'dislike'? That seems strange, unless the like feature can be disabled?

Marxists always seem to embrace capitalism when it benefits them. Even if they need the economic push to make it big, they usually won't make it anywhere nearly as big as organic growth ideas like Mahasi meditation which don't need the capitalist corporate world to reach millions of people. I still think the buddhadasa cult won't grow much as a result of their corporate undertakings. Its too riddled with self-contradictory hermeneutics designed to twist the Dhamma into something resembling Pol Pot's regime.
