Body Odor stinks to high heaven

Post by polo » Thu Oct 24, 2019 2:52 pm

I hope I can talk about "Body Odor" here, since it is connected to wellness. Today when I was on the train some passengers(a couple) walked pass me and the body odor was so bad.
Imagine the odor sting my nose, yes it is that bad.
Do they(a couple) know that their body odor really stinks? May be they don't know.
They could go to see doctor and have the sweat glands under the arm pit surgically removed.
Many people have done that in Europe.
Could I tell them their body odor is bad? Would they be angry with me?

Sweat-gland removal is a drastic solution for something that can be sorted out with soap and water.

Telling them they smell bad is also pretty drastic, in my view, as it risks offending someone who is a complete stranger and who will be gone from your presence in a few minutes. I recommend reflecting on the benefits of cleanliness for yourself, and refraining from causing offence.

... and by wearing clothes made of fabrics that don't exacerbate the smell. Many new types of fabrics, usually made of polyester, tend to smell really badly, and very soon, at that. Viscose is an old classic in the category of smell-exacerbating fabrics.

A fox can't smell its den.

As the saying goes, we mammals get used to the smell and the nose sensors get fatigued and no longer smell a bad smell, even our own, after a while.

I agree with SV, telling them would probably offend them. In some cases, they might even punch you for saying that; not worth the risk.

 Agreed. Natural cotton and wool are best.

Its a reminder the body is disgusting. Yours is no different. You could smell just as bad and not know it.

Before deodorant became common in the 1800s, body odor was a thing which people didn't bother about, and many people washed just a couple of times a year, or once a month.
It's a modern conceit that we shouldn't be smelling the body. It's natural. Just like animals, we smell.

A facetious response: if people really do "stink to high heaven", how do the devas there respond?

Is the body order is a result of the food we eat?

Partly.
People who eat (a lot of) garlic smell different from people who don't, and meat-eaters smell different from vegetarians.
But we also smell differently according to how clean we are and for lots of other reasons, e.g. illness affects our smell.

I think it is bacteria more than the sweat.
For instance the smell of your socks.
The best is to wash with salt water.
Soap not going to help much.

Odor is odor, bad or good is our own perception. Example: durian fruit for some has disgusting odor, for those who live in southeast asia, durian is a delicacy.

Also if you experience smelling bad odor it is probably the fruition of your own bad kamma.

Mundane and supermundane.

I thought devas were beyond 'aversion and clinging' duality.
