When you stretch any muscles, do it slowly and gradually. If you do it suddenly, then you maybe could tear a tendon or something.
If you are young, and do stretching, it's easier, possibly. Like when I was younger, I stretched, did martial arts moves all the time, that whenever I wanted to, I could do a quick front leg swing stretch basically whenever I wanted to, without fear of tearing anything.
When you get older, and rarely do stretching, that's when you have to be careful not to do it too quickly. If you do it too quickly -- OR DO TOO EXTREME OF A STRETCH -- you may tear something that might take years to heal (if it ever heals in your specific case??!).
