A short article based on a new book covering what science has found about the big risks to society from weed use.

I agree with the author that we should have more public information campaigns aimed at highlighting the acute risks associated with the use of marijuana - even though there might be some benefits to legalizing certain kinds of recreational drug use.

So the black tide of psychosis and the red tide of violence are rising steadily, almost unnoticed, on a slow green wave.
is what that author says.

Its a Neo-Con website; thus probably exaggerated. Certainly marijuana is particularly dangerous for people with a disposition of mental-illness. My impressions are marijuana can enchance underlying dispositions. The article also probably makes a valid point that today strains of marijuana are much stronger than previous due to cultivation methods. But personally, I have never found in generally marijuana is associated with violence (unlike alcohol). Personally, i don't like being around drunk people but stoners are generally OK.

Ah, I see now, thankyou. I wondered why he was using such ridiculously dramatic language.
Plus the market is ripe for a backlash book about cannabis, ($$$) after all those states legalised it. There's profit in panic.

But anyway, marijuana is no use for Buddhists. It clouds the mind extremely.

It condemns "violence" of marijuana users but praises certain ridiculous Neo-Con wars; as though the wars were/are not violent and as though violence does not occur due to other causes or in other situations.

Too true. If you want Dhamma, keep off the grass. :meditate:

Greetings,

Ok, now that the origins of the piece have been cleared up, that's enough about "Neo-Con"... the OP has created a parallel topic at Dharma Wheel Engaged if that aspect is of interest to you.

I think there are dangers of marijuana and they are probably mostly not acknowledged. The only violence I see involved is in the drug trade surrounding it, mostly not the users. I do agree though probably any hallucinogenic drug is associated with mental illness.

Speaking from experience, the main danger of marijuana is it's lack of overt negative consequences.

It doesn't cause your life to implode like other substances might. You can function, hold down a job, and maintain relationships whilst being high for all of your waking hours. And thus you can persist in a kind of twilight zone, without ever really facing your responsibilities, or doing anything proactive about your situation for years, completely blind to the fact that marijuana addiction stifles your motivation and ability to face up to negative emotions.

It might not be a massive health risk, or physically addictive, but marijuana has the insidious effect of subtly stifling the lives of people who are prone to using it regularly without them realising what it is doing, or even that it has a negative effect.
"If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"
