Is Coconut Oil Overrated?

I've been replacing animal fat in my diet with 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil a day. I like to spread it over toast. Is there any evidence to the claim that coconut oil speeds up metabolism and improves thyroid function?

Short anwer: yes, overrated.

It is important in evaluating dietary claims to consider the source. Try to find the most reputable primary sources to use when making dietary decisions. There's a whole lot of just plain wrong info on the Internet.

About half of the fat in coconut oil is from medium chain fatty acids, which are beneficial to human health:
Some studies have shown that MCTs can help in the process of excess calorie burning, thus weight loss.[4][5][6][7][8] MCTs are also seen as promoting fat oxidation and reduced food intake.[9] Interest in MCTs has been expressed by endurance athletes and the bodybuilding community.[10] While health benefits from MCTs seem to occur, a link to improved exercise performance is weak.[9] A number of studies back the use of MCT oil as a weight loss supplement, but these claims are not without conflict, as about an equal number found inconclusive results.[11]

I have no idea. It tastes good on toast though. I don't recommend more than two tablespoons in a day.

The myth of saturated fat has been disproven. It's never shown any negative health impacts if it taken within a low sugar diet. I'm actually surprised the heart association has doubled down on this. Very weak "science". I'll post the links when I have more time.

Since I am watching my weight, I can't justify all the fat and empty calories in coconut oil. Next time, if I want to spread something on my toast, it will be with non-fat cream cheese. If I use coconut oil again, it will be a small amount to grease a frying pan for cooking.
