Which beverages do you mostly take?

Post by DNS »

Since we have several recent topics about coffee, tea, etc., I thought I'd start a poll on what we drink the most.

No alcohol on the list?

I selected soda pop, water, and coffee.

I thought about putting beer, wine, hard liquor on there, but since this is a Buddhist forum and there is already so much opposition to even a beer-clicking emoticon, I figured I better not put them there. And then of course some might troll for "fun" and vote up alcohol.

I drink tea (with soya milk) throughout the day. I used to drink several cups of coffee daily, until about five weeks ago. Apart from taking longer to wake up in the mornings, giving up coffee has had no discernible effect upon my life or health in general, or upon meditation. It just seems like giving up a harmless pleasure. I have given up coffee several times in the past, with the same result. It's easy to do, but does nothing for me apart from saving me money.

Those needing or preferring lactose drink substitutes and using soya milk might scan the internet for information on the pros and cons of using soya products not processed in the ways known in east Asian countries. You sauce, miso, tofu, tempe, etc. are all fermented or otherwise processed such that the raw soy material is essentially transformed.

Some research indicates that soy beans are NOT properly digestible for humans, while better for livestock. Something like 98% of soy beans produced are for animal food. There's, however, greater profit margin in putting it into food for humans -- perhaps irrespective of whether it's healthy to do so or not.

Almond milk, rice milk, etc. are, on the other hand, thought to not have such problems.

Hot water with lemon, and sometimes honey, is key for me getting through colder winter weather. I have thermos bottles and mugs lined up on the counter next to the electric kettle.

Herbal teas, primarily fresh mint or ginger, plus any other herbs I have. Filtered water, fruit or veg juice and non dairy milks occasionally.

Probably could have left water out of the poll as everyone drinks that sooner or later.

I live in a hot climate (it's midwinter here now; days typically get up to 25-28C, nights down to 15-18C  ) so we need to keep up our fluid intake. I drink mugs of fairly weak coffee with meals and top up with water in between. It's the same with anything alcoholic, btw - light beer rather than normal strength.
Soft drinks? Only when I want a sugar hit during a break in exercise.
