Udo's Oil - blend of Omega 3, 6, & 9 Essential Fatty Acids

Anyone here use Udo's Oil 3-6-9 Blend? A weight trainer told me that Udo's Oil was good for people who lift weights and when I started to do more research on Essential Fatty Acids I was surprised at how much potential health benefits they provide. I was also told by a couple of doctors that Omega 3's are good for mood disorders.

I've taken Udo's Oil off and on for a couple of years and I do notice an increase in energy and my mood seems more balance when I take it (could be placebo effect). Anyway, here's a link to the site: Udo's Oil. I'm interested in hearing if anyone else on the forums has experienced any positive changes from taking Omega 3 products.

Hi dhamma_newb,
I don't take any supplements.
I'm pretty sure I'm getting everything I need in my diet.
kind regards,

Ben

Hi Ben,

I must admit I don't have the greatest diet (it's not the worst but it could be better). The local diet in Hawai'i is a mix of lots of different Asian foods but over the years many American and fast food restaurants have popped up. Are you a vegetarian or vegan?

Metta,
Don

I was vegetarian but after seeing my doctor he informed me that I needed to change my diet as a result of a blood condition. I don;t eat very much flesh. Apart from that my diet is pretty good. Lots of fresh vegetables and some complex carbs.
kind regards,

Ben

I've tried to be a vegetarian but I'm not good at cooking so my food wasn't very tasty. I actually enjoy vegetarian dishes that are prepared well.

Get yourself a good cook-book, Dhamma_newb. Don't compromise on ingredients and follow the recipes exactly. Over time as your experience grows, so will your confidence. In Hawaii, you should have no shortage of very high quality fresh produce and a range of eastern and western staples. A good vegetarian cook-book that I can recommend is Madhur Jeffrey's "World Vegetarian Cooking". If it hasn;t been edited for an American audience then you will need to convert all your measurements to imperial from the metric. But its excellent. Also, consider doing a basic cooking course - this will be invaluable for you. Cooking is a life skill that I think everyone needs to develop. Being able to cook not only for yourself but fpr friends and family is extremely rewarding and a great expression of metta and dana.
kind regards,

Ben

Thanks Ben! I will check that book out. I love what you said about cooking for friends and family as an expression of metta and dana! I'm only good at cooking breakfast foods mostly but when I've cooked for others I notice my mindfulness grow and I put more care and attention into the entire process of cooking. I haven't made anyone sick so I guess there's still some hope for my cooking skills yet lol. Thanks again for the recommendation.

hi friend,

i'll give you a quick lesson in human needs for fat and my opinions on udo's oil:

the human body only has an actual requirement for 2 fats, what are commonly referred to as omega-3 and omega-6. using a supplemental flax oil like udos oil is not doing 'something extra' for your body, it is just supplying your body with what it needs to function. the effects on mood and energy you were feeling are normal, well documented in scientific literature, and again not an 'extra' effect... likely what you are feeling is just the result of correcting a deficiency in omega3 fats which is allowing you to function as you should be.

omega-6 are very prevalent in most westerners diets, sources would be: nuts, soy oils, canola oils, fried foods, salad dressing etc. most people are actually getting way too much.

omega-3 however, because in food is only found in limited amounts in flax, walnuts, fish and leafy greens tends to be on the lower side of people intake.

both meeting total 3 & 6 needs are important, as well as maintaining the proper ratio of 3:6. both deficiency and improper ratio are extremely detrimental to human health, and play a causal role in many inflammatory disease (cancer, heart disease). shoot for a total intake of about minimum 2g/day of omega 3 and maximum 8g/day of omega 6. ideally this ration should be 2:1-3:1 of omega6:omega3... dysfunction begins to occur at ratios above 4:1. most westerners float in the 12:1-20:1 range.

that all being said, for most people omega6 supplementation will not be necessary. omega-9 isn't a necessary fat, and is a technically incorrect designation... this is put on supplements packages because 3:6:9 is catchy and allows for higher pricing. Udo's oil is good, but extremely overpriced. For most people purposes using plain flax oil (the omega3 source in udo's oil) will be better.

i hope this was useful for you, please let me know if you have any other questions

Hi marc108,

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah Udo's Oil is expensive but I thought I was doing my body a favor by spending the dough. Guess I should've done more research. Thanks again you've probably saved me a bunch of dineros.

Peace,
Don

You're welcome. Just get a bottle of good flax oil and you will be set! You can grab a 32 ounce of flax oil (jarrow brand on iherb.com) for about 19$.

Cool thanks again that's much cheaper than what I was paying for Udo's Oil. I'll look around at the local health food shops. Take care.

No offence but just don't trust people saying "it has been proven by scientific research that..".
"nutrition science" is full of quackery, commericialism and just really bad science. I've talked to a doc about this stuff a few months ago and even she admitted that there are fundamental paradigm changes almost every 10 years in this field. There is a whole industry behind this food supplement story interested in just getting your money, not finding out the truth. People like Ben Goldacre give very easy to understand talks and write books about the methods of bad science. There are so many misleading, methodically wrong and total misinterpretations of data especially in the area of nutrition that you should be really careful on what and why you believe it. This is especially true when people want to sell you a bottle of oil for 20 dollars for health reasons.
