Taking up Shaolin Kung Fu

Postby Stiphan » Fri Sep 30, 2016 7:20 pm

A friend suggested I took up Karate. However, I asked her if I could change the Martial Art, and so I will be taking up Shaolin Kung Fu. Any opinions on it?

I have had zero interest in martial arts my entire life, simply because I thought they all involved violence. I opted for Kung Fu because of its connections with Buddhism. I have mild kyphosis as well, so my uncle said Kung Fu will be helpful for my back as well.

If you want a martial art that promotes peace and non-violence, you could see if Aikido is for you.
Aikido is based on originally destructive fighting techniques, but is practiced in such a way that the goal is to control your opponents without causing any significant harm, and its whole philosophy is centered on peace (no attacks, for example, you only respond to an attack with non-violence).

Some people find it looks unconvincing in terms of real-life effectiveness, but those who know a bit about martial arts also know that the same could be said of all traditional martial arts (including kung fu and karate).

What are your reasons to practice a martial art? So far the only I've seen is to help with your kyphosis. Surely there are other practices that would help better with your kyphosis than a martial art.

Me likely!!

I love martial arts. I used to do jujitsu and would love to learn shaolin kung fu or jeet kune do. I have a big interest in weapon training also.
I would love to get back into it. For now I just practice my kicking and footwork.
