Diabetic symptom problems -with regards to ordinationation

Post by polo » Sat Aug 17, 2019 12:52 pm

I wonder whether anyone has asked this question already. I have diabetic symptoms- by that I mean if I eat the wrong foods e.g. too much sweet things I get the diabetic symptoms - skin itch, sudden drop of blood sugar(hypoglycemic) get very hungry, very uncomfortable feeling and cannot think clearly. I avoid being a diabetic by eating lots of vegetables, some meat, moderate carbohydrates like rice, noodles etc., I do eat sweet thing but not often, e.g. desserts.
I wish to ordain as a monk in Thailand but I guess it is out of the question because when I see the foods the monks eat I know it will bring on all the symptoms in my case. And worst of all they only eat 2 meals after noon time they not allow to eat any solid foods.
Be glad to hear from monks or lay persons who have answer to my problems. Metta

You might survive best in the Thai Forest Sangha at Wat Pah Nanachat.

The staple there is glutinous rice, which releases its sugars more slowly than the usual polished white rice offered in most other areas. A number of the monks are vegetarians, so getting sufficient fruit and vegetables should not be a problem. They eat only one meal a day, but that actually may prove better for you.

The Vinaya rules allow monks to use the five tonics: ghee, butter, oil, honey, and sugar outside of the usual hours. You can take some boiled sweets etc., if you get hypoglycemic at any time of day or night.

There are also many other herbal medicines from roots and vines that you can take.

Have you spoken to a doctor about it? Have you been diagnosed as diabetic?

No, I have not spoken to a doctor or been diagnosed as diabetic. But it is so obvious isn't it? With all those symptoms you can't be wrong with this self-diagnosis.
I think I will go and see a doctor just to confirm it.

Oh, I forgot to mention lately for the past 8 months I have been eating lots of fats, e.g. butter, pork, lard, and it seems to help with my symptoms, I don't feel hungry in between meals anymore. I feel good.
I read up on fats, good fats , bad fats etc., apparently we consume far too much carbohydrates in proportion to fats.
I know lots of people going to tell me to watch out, it's bad for your heart etc.,

Not obvious at all. None of what you described is very specific. You absolutely could be wrong about your self diagnosis. If you are morbidly obese, then obviously it is more likely you are diabetic than not, but even that doesn't exclude anything. I am a physician's assistant and am not giving you medical advice, just warning you not to self diagnose anything, and also not to seek medical advice online-- online may be a good place to discuss some things, but personal medical issues are not one of them. :anjali:

Don't forget the importance of exercise. Outdoor cardios like running, biking, hiking, etc. would be best.

Two meals a day 'effective' to treat type 2 diabetes https://www.bbc.com/news/health-27422547
the buddha eats one meal a day http://obo.genaud.net/dhamma-vinaya/pts ... rn.pts.htm
all bhikkhus and bhikkhunis ideally should eat one meal a day, if they are training to become arahants. in my opinion, expecting two meals is high-maintenance and can make monastics look like householders

in any case, spiritual liberation should always come above health. it's fine not to be a monastic if you have a legitimate reason.
does anyone know if the tonics are good for or commonly used to treat symptoms of diabetes, like hypoglycemia? https://www.wisdomlib.org/buddhism/book ... c1761.html
