There are probably many in Thailand. There is also Meetirigala Nissarana Vanaya in Sri Lanka, which is apparently a good monastery, but somewhat difficult to live there. Have you considered Australia, New Zealand or the UK?

I don't know if you like the Ajahn Chah monasteries, but maybe this could be useful (Ajahn Chah branch monasteries from around the world).

Another great resource is the World Buddhist Directory.

Very helpful, thanks! Buddhanet has a lot of information, it is taking some work to navigate :computerproblem:
So many beautiful wats I would be happy with, the challenge is to find the English speaking wats :sage:

I would aim at learning the language where you intend to ordain. If you are mainly interested in English speaking monasteries, then that would basically come down to Wat Pah Nanachat in Thailand, monasteries in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

That is, unless you don't mind learning the Vinaya and listening to Dhamma talks in Sinhalese or Thai, not having a clue what is being said.

I've read on dhammawheel there are many thai wats English speakers can ordain. Wherever I go I will make an effort to learn the language. But I'm not discouraged by this language barrier, I know there are wats that teach in English. http://www.dhammawheel.com/viewtopic.ph ... 4&start=20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. This thread is very helpful, wat tha ma o is a candidate and wat sri born ruang... I may end up traveling there without knowing which wat I will ordain but bounce around a list of candidates until I find home.

Good luck with your research. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I have been preparing to ordain for more than a year and can probably help you out with some things.

Also, make sure to read the E-Sangha transcript.

no, amongst many reasons westerners feel drawn to the east, I'd like to be closer to the source. Western Buddhism is developing
Well, on the place you may find out, that asian buddhism is much farther from the source than "developing" western one .)
So be prepared for that.

I would say the religious (and cultural) aspect of it is a lot more present. That is for Theravāda; Mahāyāna being another story.

Asian Buddhism? Asia includes Myanmar , Thailand, sri Lanka, all of which are significantly different in their approach to practice. Secondly, the Buddha himself founded Buddhism in asia, which has survived 2500 years, while Buddhism has developed pretty much 50 years in the west.

How can one label the Buddhism of all of asia as far from the source, has this person traveled all of asia? Let alone those 3 countries? I wonder why posters act like experts to validate a negative opinion. Where I'm from, the goal to be a Buddhist monk is unheard of and I would be very much more inclined to encourage rather than discourage someone with such an aspiration. Negative opinions really aren't necessary. Facts are appreciated.

Just my opinion...now, let's be friends...egos and biased opinions are unbecoming of a dhamma website

For other people interested in Thailand for ordination - wat sanghathan Is on my list. The abbot speaks English and ordination is possible there, after a time as a lay person. It is a beautiful place.

I am, also, compiling a list of monasteries that English speakers can ordain in Asia. I will post all of them here when I have finished. I have about 5 now and I know there will be more that I find, so I will refrain from posting the list as it is, unfinished.

Best wishes to everyone.

Have you ever stayed there? I haven't done so for over twenty years, but I remember it as not particularly pleasant. Firstly it's surrounded by marshy land and therefore extremely mosquito-ridden. Secondly, Ajahn Sanong is a very popular preacher and so the wat gets very noisy and busy on weekends and uposatha days.

Very helpful information venerable, thank you so much :thanks:
No, I haven't stayed there, and its great to get someone's firsthand experience. I haven't the money to make multiple trips, so I am gathering as much information as I can before I make the journey; then I plan to visit the monasteries on my list, to find home.
Very kind of you to offer your experience, the negative aspects are very important to take into consideration.

Your experience is invaluable, venerable, many thanks.

I would recommend wat pah nanachat or ajahn pramote in chon buri. They have many english speaking monks there, or shd i say westerner monks.
Thailand is safe, the trouble is only in the far south, 3 provinces bordering malaysia.
