Does anyone know of a good critique of Abhidhamma/Commentaries in Burmese?

Post by dylanj »

I have a good friend from Burma, he holds very strongly to commentarial & abhidhammic views of the Dhamma...I try to explain the flaws but the language barrier is too much.
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in

Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss

Greetings,

Maybe best just to leave it?

I'm sure you appreciate your friend not making efforts to convert you to Burmese Buddhism?...

Paul. :)

As I see it...

If someone is Burmese, and has access to Burmese Buddhism, I'd be wary of blitzing holes in something of theirs, especially if I didn't have something which was both better and understandable to replace it with.

Removing commentary & abhidhamma from Burmese Buddhism is better than Burmese Buddhism as it is
Born, become, arisen – made, prepared, short-lived
Bonded by decay and death – a nest for sickness, perishable
Produced by seeking nutriment – not fit to take delight in

Departure from this is peaceful – beyond reasoning and enduring
Unborn, unarisen – free from sorrow and stain
Ceasing of all factors of suffering – stilling of all preparations is bliss

Anyway, he does try to convince me to read abhidhamma & commentary so I think it's only fair :)

This is the Early Buddhism subforum. I would think here I don't need to defend my view that the commentaries & abhidhamma are flawed.
