Ajahn Chah Memorial Day January 16th 2020

Post by bodom »

AJAHN CHAH MEMORIAL DAY

January 16th 2020 marks the 28th anniversary of Ajahn Chah’s passing away (in 1992). He was undoubtedly one of the most revered Buddhist teachers in the modern era, and was a doyen of the “forest monastic tradition” who attracted many Thai and foreign disciples to train under him.

Ajahn Chah led an unassuming and austere life as a true ‘bhikkhu’. His teachings were rooted in direct experience and presented in simple language. He was an exemplary teacher who inspired deep confidence and enthusiasm amongst his followers. Let us pay humble tribute to this great teacher by recollecting his teachings and by practising them faithfully.

The heart of the path is so simple. No need for long explanations. Give up clinging to love and hate, just rest with things as they are. That is all I do in my own practice.

Do not try to become anything. Do not make yourself into anything. Do not be a meditator. Do not become enlightened. When you sit, let it be. When you walk, let it be. Grasp at nothing. Resist nothing.

Of course, there are dozens of meditation techniques to develop samadhi and many kinds of vipassana. But it all comes back to this-just let it all be. Step over here where it is cool, out of the battle.

Mindfulness is life. Whenever we don’t have mindfulness, when we are heedless, it’s as if we are dead.

"It's as if we are carrying a heavy rock. As we carry it, we feel weighed down but we don't know what to do with it, so we keep carrying it...Even if someone tells us, 'Come on. Throw it away. It'll be good...,' we're still not willing... we're afraid we won't have anything left...until we're so thoroughly weak and tired that...we let it go.
Only when we let it go do we understand letting go, We feel at ease...But while we were carrying it, we didn't know at all how useful letting go could be." -- Ajahn Chah

One of the quotes I like most:
Vassa of 1979
Q: English-speaking disciples
A: Venerable Ajahn Chah

  • Q: Is this mind you are talking about called the 'Original Mind'?
    A: What do you mean?

  • Q: It seems as if you are saying there is something else outside of the conventional body-mind (five khanda). Is there something else? What do you call it?
A: There isn't anything and we don't call it anything -- that's all there is to it! Be finished with all of it. Even the knowing doesn't belong to anybody, so be finished with that, too! Consciousness is not an individual, not a being, not a self, not an other, so finish with that -- finish with everything! ...
