Who in your opinion is the most famous Buddhist teacher of all time?

I think Nagarjuna.

The Buddha, of course. :buddha2:

If you mean besides the Buddha, then I'd say the 14th (current) Dalai Lama is the most "famous" or well-known.

If you mean the best (in terms of wisdom) teacher after Buddha, then I'd say Sariputta.

I think Ananda is the most famous next to Buddha.
Is there any Buddhist who does not know about Ananda?

I get the impression Nagarjuna is not well-known in Theravada countries. At least when i lived in Thailand for enough years, I never heard of Nagarjuna. I only heard about Nagarjuna the 1st time on the Western internet.

Not sure, but maybe how important or influential they are is a better question? Especially in modern times, and in Theravada, perhaps Ajahn Mun would be a good candidate. Ajahn Chah too since he really helped to spread the tradition around the world, but since he considered Ajahn Mun as his teacher, we could still consider Ajahn Chah's contribution (to some extent) as a result of Ajahn Mun's influence. Ajahn Mun is considered to have had many Arahant disciples and those disciples, including Ajahn Chah, have had countless of disciples and their impact on the world as a whole is impossible to determine, but certainly significant and worth noting! Of course he might not be as influential as some of the figures throughout history, especially since not that much time has passed since he was active in teaching.

This action-packed, reincarnated bodhisatva of mercy and compassion will kill you if you transgress your boundaries of carbon gas emissions and then kill you again because you didn't die hard enough the first time.

So you gotta ask yourself... is he not merciful?
