New website: BuddhaRupa

Post by BKh »

After the recent release of over three hundred thousand images from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC) into the public domain, I created a website to help people discover these and other images of the Buddha around the internet.

https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/

I also setup a facebook page so you can be notified when new images are added
https://www.facebook.com/BuddhaRupa/

In addition to the posts with the main images, there are also fledgling pages that explain the basics of common elements of Buddhist iconography, including hand mudras, the urna on the forehead, and markings on hands and feet. I hope to add information about materials and artistic periods. The idea is not to give a scholarly treatment, just to help people gain a deeper connection to what they are seeing when they look at images of the Buddha.

The images are highly tagged so you can explore similar images. For example:
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/tag/pakistan/
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/tag/vitarka-mudra/
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/tag/head/
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/tag/bronze/
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/tag/bh ... sha-mudra/
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/tag/gandhara/

Links to high resolution images are also included, and for some statues this is the only way to really appreciate the detail. Some favorites:

https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/2017/0 ... sri-lanka/

I also hope to have posts for famous images...
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/2017/0 ... -bodhgaya/
https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/2017/0 ... lonnaruwa/

Many of the images are in the public domain, but be sure to check with the original site that they are taken from.

Any feedback, ideas, or corrections would be welcome.

Awesome! Thank you, Bhante.

I would make one small suggestion, which would really improve the website: depending on the size of your screen, the "Older Posts" bar can easily be missed. Adding infinite scroll would make it so none of the images can be missed. It is probably part of your WordPress.com theme already, but it can also very easily be added if it isn't. Here is the WordPress page. Read "NOTE:" first, and if you don't have infinite scroll already integreted in your current theme, read the rest.

Cheers.

Thanks for the feedback! I looked into it and it seems that if there are any elements in the footer it automatically disables infinite scroll, which kind of makes sense. I wanted people to be able to use the tag cloud in the footer to explore, but being able to keep scrolling is probably more beneficial. I think I have it set so that on the home page there is no footer, only on the other pages.

Let me know what you think.

Best wishes,
BKh

Based on feedback, a page has been added with popular tags to help explore the site:

https://buddharupa.wordpress.com/explore/

A button has also been added to subscribe to new images by e-mail.

Thanks for the feedback!
