Dear Members,

When I was very young , my family went to Bang-Saen Beach, Cholburi. Our first stop was Guan-Yin Temple on the hill that look over the sea where we often saw a few big whales jumping above the sea-waves.
My mom so loved beautiful Guan-Yin "Metta Goddess" that stood right by the hill surrounded with cute monkeys.
A monkey snatched my silky red baby-blanket and ran away up on the hill. My mom gave a big bunch of bananas to those monkeys by put them under a big tree.

That day was an important day of Guan-Yin Temple, people came to pray and eat vegetarian soup, as the temple cooks vegetarian soup to share with the prayer. So they invited us to have brunch with them..oh so yummy. I was the youngest kid in there..a Chinese nun liked me enough to sit me on her lap and kissed me, gave me a small jade bracelet, I loved it alot..it made me forget the silk blanket that the monkey snatched away.

NOTE: It is generally accepted among east Asian adherents that Guanyin originated as the Sanskrit Avalokiteśvara (अवलोकितेश्वर). Commonly known in English as the Mercy Goddess or Goddess of Mercy,[3] Guanyin is also revered by Chinese Taoists (sometimes called Daoists) as an Immortal.

In Thai, she is called Kuan Im (Thai: กวนอิม), Phra Mae Kuan Im (Thai: พระแม่กวนอิม), or Chao Mae Kuan Im (Thai: เจ้าแม่กวนอิม).
----------
Our next stop was Guan-Yin Temple at Pattaya Beach where we spent 3 days in a big villa by the beach and became beach people..fun fun fun!!

Dear Yawares,

I have always wondered about the Thai reverence of Kwan Yin. Is it a vestige of a Mahayana past or do common people and bhikkhus pay her reverence and petition her? Mettaya.

Dear Khalil Bodhi,

Oh..please read this full information about Guan-Yin:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guanyin" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In Thailand, we think of her as Goddess of Metta/mercy...not a Bodhisatta......Chinese people do!
I never saw monks at Guan-Yin Temples....only Thai/Chinese nuns...they made the best yummy MOONCAKEs for sale at the temples...my mom bought so many boxes as part of the donation(all sale-money goes to the temples)...we all loved loved  mooncakes!!!!
I think Guan-Yin statues/pictures are all beautiful

Hi

I know this temple well, I worked in Chonburi. It's well worth a visit and I've had 'ahan jay' (Chinese vegetarian meal) on Sunday several times with the family.

There are many Thai Chinese in the area hence reverence for Guan Yin. Thais are very respectful of their neighbour's gods :)

Dear Graham, :Teaching is a noble job :anjali:

Don't worry I can color your reply. Are you still in Chonburi, near Kuan-Yin Temple at Khao Sam-Mook near the big hill/monkeys?
That was my favorite spot to ride bike with my brother/collecting seashells on the beach so many dangerous rocks there we couldn't swim..but when low tide we could walk far far from the beach and ran real fast when the tide came back fast too.
My family went vacation there every summer when I was very young..and my dad bought a big land near Bang-Saen University.

Could you please write about Chonburi/your family/your experiences and post it @ Lounge or Personal experience so we members can enjoy reading it....I'll love to :reading: ...Have you ever been to Jomthien Beach/Sattaheep Beach (better than Pattaya)??
I'll rent 'Quiet American' today..thanks,
yawares

Hi Yawares

We are in Rayong now. We spent a year in the south, but my wife hated it :stirthepot: being too far from her family in Bkk, :alien: so we moved to Chonburi, I hated it, too busy, :toilet: Rayong seems a compromise. I take the kids to Jomthien Beach sometimes. We normally head east 10-29km now, it's clean and quiet. I loved all the Chinese temples in Chonburi though :sage:
I'll write out something when the kids give me the chance

Dear Graham,
I love Rayong...love Koh Samet the most..I went there with my college friends..we were on the big boat ..luckily not real big waves, kind of dangerous to Koh Samet...but so beautiful like a dreamland...things might be changed by now. If you/family go to Koh Samet, please tell me how beautiful it is nowaday...post your family pictures on the beach would be very nice indeed.

I watched Quiet American today...very sad..I hate USA policy those days...innocent people had to die...I better do more good deeds/best merits so I'll be reborn into one of those high heavens next life.

I also hate Iraq war,

I hate all wars. It was the 1982 war with Argentina that made my rethink my position and my life. Mainly how the politicians lied and killed for their political aims.

I decided not to work in a career which could assist the military in any way and became a teacher. As a student my best friend was an Indian. I went to India and stayed with his family. I saw the different cultures, religions and alternative ways to think and live one's life.

It is something which has completed changed my outlook and pointed me on the path of Buddhism.

Dear Graham,
Thanks for telling me your story...and why you choose to stay in Thailand and not India? Please tell me more, I think your life is very interesting. I used to know 2 American monks in Thailand who became monks because of Vietnam war and now they are following Buddha's path...they both are true forest monks who were very close to Luangta Bua, Wat Pa Baan Tad, Udon-Thani.

I'm glad you like Buddhism,

Long Story .... I went to a Thai Temple in Britain, not easy to find Indian ones. We have about 4 forest Temples set up in the Ajarn Chah family. Ironically I have met monks in both Ubon and Rayong that I knew in Britain.

We even had kids Dharma camp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ogtTeFDur8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Can u spot me and the kids?

India is difficult to get a job in. Thailand is easy. I met my wife, who is Thai, in Britain and the kids were bilingual. It's funny; I met my wife wandering in a park with food.. I liked the food, didn't realise she hadn't made it.

Not being nasty, I do prefer Indian food and much of Indian culture. In India Buddhists don't eat meat or drink alcohol for example. I mustn't mention which women I prefer ...

It was actually easier for me to practice in Britain than here. We go to a forest Monastery still, I don't tend to visit those in town often, other than my kids go to a Temple School. :broke:

I've written up the first part of my biography in the personal experience section ... more to follow ... :reading:
