What is Sangha, what does it mean?

Post by Samana Johann 1 »

Buddhabodhisattas and interested,

Bhikkhu Kemidas, some time ago, expressed a realisation he had, here on DW: when taking refuge, taking refuge in the Bhikkhu Sangha of the Buddha is meant.

Freel given to discover the topic and possible find a threefold Refuge, eg. become either a monastic disciple, homeless follower, or a lay disciple.

Was ist oder bedeutet die Sangha? - What is Sangha or does it mean?

As he is recollecting the Sangha, his mind is calmed, and joy arises; the defilements of his mind are abandoned, just as when clothing is cleansed through the proper technique. And how is clothing cleansed through the proper technique? Through the use of salt earth & lye & cow dung & the appropriate human effort. This is how clothing is cleansed through the proper technique. In the same way, the defiled mind is cleansed through the proper technique. And how is the defiled mind cleansed through the proper technique? There is the case where the disciple of the noble ones recollects the Sangha... As he is recollecting the Sangha, his mind is cleansed, and joy arises; the defilements of his mind are abandoned. He is thus called a disciple of the noble ones undertaking the Sangha-Uposatha. He lives with the Sangha. It is owing to the Sangha that his mind is calmed, that joy arises, and that whatever defilements there are in his mind are abandoned. This is how the mind is cleansed through the proper technique.
Only if taking part, access concentration, path and fruit, can be expected.

It's not clear if the possibility to take on form here is given, so also this post might be made on merely uncomfortable trust. Please don't be shy to make remark as well as to do what ever with the post you might be inspired to. Key is found here. May it be, how ever, understood as Dhamma-Dana toward the Sangha of Buddhas Savakas and those following them and not thought for any kind of trade or exchange for low purpose for the world. Feel also always welcome here.

It appears the word community of Sangha is the most important but least understood word.
Ven. Punnaji says that community of Sangha include all the people who follow the Dhamma.
For example the members of Dhamma Wheel is part of the Sangha community.
In this community we have people who are beginners who achieved lower levels and the people who achieved higher levels.
We should not look at individuals but the Sangha community.
When we give (Dana) to a monk or temple we give to the community not to an individual monk.
However this noble ideas seems lost due to the segregation of the community.
I like to know how this idea is practiced in the real world.

The budda sasana is Budda, Damma, sangha. The damma expounded by budda is stored in memory and otherwise is gifted to the lay people by the sanga , a lineage followed aftet lord Budda. The sanga as a community is bound to obey rules laid down in the vinaya pitaka ( the book of desciplines for sangha ).
Hence we have to draw a mark between the sangha and the lay buddhist ( upasaka) . The sangha community of budda lineage is very important for teaching the budda damma.

assembly (community) of bhikkhus,
But dunt translate it, just using SANGGHÅ.

We call it "Sangghå Theravādå" for Theravādin.
Myanmar Theravādå, Sri Lanka, and Thai, etc.
It is Theravādin (Theravādås family/clan).

European countries unite to form the European Union.
European Union not a human;
Same Sangghå not a human.
Bahagia Tidak Harus Selalu Bersama

Lebih layak disebut 'orang yang telah mengarungi air baih (saṃsārå)'."

Sangha means a group of people (monks or serious meditators) who trained themselves in the Fourth of The Noble Truth.

It is not a group of Monks we call Sangha.

Some monks are trained and/or well-trained in The Fourth of The Noble Truth. And we called them as a part of The Sangha. A Dana to such will fruitful.

But those who are not trained and/or well trained in The Fourth of The Noble Truth are not a part of The Sangha. They are just a bunch of people cloaked as Monks with different motives. But they claimed as part of The 'Sangha' that is why we end up with a lot of Sangha nowadays.

Hope you could understand as definition change from time to time.

There are three aspects of the term saṅgha:

1. The monastic community (monks/nuns/novices)
2. The lay Buddhist community
3. Any person at any of the four stages of Enlightenment—whether lay or ordained (i.e., ariya-saṅgha)
