Font troubles

Post by phil »

Hi all

I'm puzzled why transcribed Pali doesn't always come out clearly when posted, whether this means I haven't installed proper fonts, or what. Once one installs "unicode" are all of these problems eliminated?

For example, Ven. Dhammanando kindly posted this for me in another thread:

jīvitaṃ attabhāvo ca, sukhadukkhā ca kevalā.
ekacittasamāyuttā, lahu so vattate khaṇo.

ye niruddhā marantassa, tiṭṭhamānassa vā idha.
sabbepi sadisā khandhā, gatā appaṭisandhikā.

anibbattena na jāto, paccuppannena jīvati.
cittabhaṅgā mato loko, paññatti paramatthiyā ti.

This is going to sound utterly stupid, but does everyone see those four little squares where letters are missing? Usually when this happens I can identify the missing letter - it's often the .m, but in this case that doesn't seem to be the case.

Could someone help me understand this, and also kindly supply the missing letters.

Thank you.

Phil

Greetings Phil,

Yes, I see the boxes too.

Bhikkhu Pesala has some resources on his website which might be useful.

Hi Phil,

Not necessarily. You will either need to adjust your browser settings to display all pages in Unicode-8, or, when you happen to be on a page that contains Pali in Unicode you can try selecting VIEW in your browser menu, then scroll down to TEXT (or CHARACTER) ENCODING, and select UNICODE-8 from the available options.

The text I posted the other day should look like this:

Thanks Retro. I feel greatly reassured that I am not the only one who sees "the boxes." I downloaded a Unicode fonts program from Bhikkhu Pesala's site but I don't have the faintest idea where it is now and what it's supposed to do. I'm a tech illiterate. Not to worry, obviously this is a minor matter.

Thank you yet again, Bhante. I will try to figure it out. And thank you kindly for the clarified text.

You will only see boxes if you don't have the Pali fonts downloaded on your computer. You will know you downloaded it correctly when you see the proper Pali accent marks.

I think this is the one I used from Goenka's organization:

http://www.tipitaka.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and it works great.

Thank you David. This is the site I usually use, and strangely enough the texts come through perfectly clear - only the index on the left doesn't. Anyways, I'll figure things out.
